latest creation - twin xml diving torch

hi all, been lurking a while but finally found some workshop time and thought id share my new creation

started this one about 4 years ago (maybe more) but at the time didn’t have the tools necessary to do half the work so it got forgotten about.

now iv got some new tools, and built some bits progress has started

specs:

2 x XML U2 driven at 2.8A
Derwichtel driver
prolonged momentary piezo switch - absolute buggers to get hold of
ahorton aspheric
2s3p bike battery pack (awaiting delivery from KD, hopefully panasonics)
dimensions 72x36x100 (might be smaller now )

most of the above is old tech as it was purchased years ago, but will do for this prototype.

suppose some pics would be good here??

home made dividing head for rounding the case

new mill

origional cad drawing

still needs a fair bit of work cleaning the body up and actually testing things, then ill hopefully anodize it all and then finally put it all together.

That housing looks like a work of art. I can see you have put hours into the years here. What lathe do you have? :+1:

thanks its had a few hours here and there over the years, i wouldn’t want to add it all up!

the lathe is a denford viceroy, very similar to the boxfords. it need a lot of work as its was badly abused at a school and is missing lots of bits, but it turns out fairly good work.

did a bit of quick testing today, just to make sure things would actually work, there’s plenty of room in the back of the housing for the driver and all the connections, so i can make all the connections on leads out the rear cable hole then push it all back in on final assembly

for this test iv only got one led and aspheric in the housing, the other is on a heatsink with a ledil iris.

driver and switch seems to work ok short press is on/ off press and hold changes mode 100-70-25-3% can hear the pwm on the lower modes but its not too bad, should improve one the driver is fixed in place

managed a crude iphone beam shot

beam is about 30cm wide at 2 meters so about a 8-9 degree beam angle

no idea on power numbers at the moment, my power supply was saying an input power of 5.5V at 1.8A in high, though that cant be right. will have to dig out my other meters and test the currents.

Is yours a 5 amp driver?

no its a 2.8A driver originally designed for a P7. at the time of purchase it was highest reliable current setting for an xml, only the sst50 could handle 5 amps back then

Wow!Looks great! :+1:

thanks, its starting to come together now. not got many more parts to make and then ill have to dig out my anodizing stuff.

and then it all went wrong . . .

tried a test fit and managed to break one of my aspherics :frowning: and i cant find the other one so now i need 2 more :frowning:

anyone know if ahorton lenses are still avaliable? or an alternative?

well iv not done much recently but have made some progress

managed to find some of the lenses at illumination supply so orderd a few up,now got 2 spares

also managed to drag out some acid and set up a makeshift anodizing bench with a couple of buckets. tried for a black wich didnt come out perfect but isnt bad

looks a bit grey in the photo but its actually reasonably dark, but also has a reddy/purple hue to it

Its good to see your still at it Bertie. Thanks for the update. :+1:
