What LEDs fit what MCPCB?

Hey folks just a quick questions on re-flowing LEDs. I have some XPG2s i want to place them on some MCPCBs but i only have some XML2 boards can i make it work? I think the XPG2 will fit onto a XPL board right?

I may have to use my XPG3 board seeing as i have so many spare but then i will i have no where to put the XPG3s lol.

Thanks for the help!

The XP designates the emitter size.

XP-E/E2, XP-G/G2, and XP-L/HI all share the same base, and fit the same PCBs. The Nichia 219 emitters are the same as well.

XP is the main thing here. Anything starting with XP will fit on an XP board.
Example, XPE, XPG, XPL all have the same footprint. XM has a larger footprint.

Yea the XML is 5 by 5 compared to the 3.5 of the XPs.

Could I some how mod a XML2 noctigon board to work with a XPG2?

…somehow?… - theorectically yes, practically, no. It would result in a very compromised design.

The center heatsink pad is large/wider for XML sized emitters and would ordinarily result in a short of anode and cathode of a XP sized emitter.

If one were to electrically insulate the center pad (for instance with a piece of Kapton tape or thermal epoxy) and somehow bridge connections from the anode/cathode pads to the same on a XP size emitter, while it would light, it would compromise the thermal conductivity of the center direct thermal path of the board. Really not a recommended approach.

(I suppose if one did use something electrically insultating but thermally conductive, such as piece of all around anodized aluminum, then maybe but that’s just fraught with peril of a short.)

Yea i can see the issue with the + and - and ground so close to each other. Oh well it was worth a try i have seen some weird MCPCB here that have been modded.

I will just use an XPG3 board and buy more later. I can wait but i wanted to do the mod today.

Just so you know the XML has the same footprint as the xhp50’s when run with a 6V driver. The XPL is basically an XM die on an XP substrate so it uses XP foot print mcpcb’s.

HI there, yes i am reviving this old thread - i'm looking for some quick advice (dont want to start new thread):

Will XPL-HI fit on the sst20 footprint? (is that how you say that?)

I have a mf01 mini and am starting to look into (potentially) reflowing the LED's with something else, hopefully xpl-hi 5d..

I am becoming experienced with reflowing leds, and have done it a few dozen times aready, and have already done some outside the box things to make mcpcb's work with my workshop tools.

But i dont want to rip apart my mf01 mini and the deal with the aux board and all of that if the xpl-hi will not fit on the sst-20 die. i think i already know that the xpl-hi is a larger footprint than sst-20, i guess i'm hoping someone says they've done it before and it'll all work out fine lol.

thanks!

I agree :+1:

xpl-hi, sst-20, N219, LH351d
are all have the same 3535 solder pads, even though the dies are different sizes

XM-L2 do not use the same mcpcb solder pads as 3535 LEDs

that is awesome news, thank you Jon ! And morelumens too!

Also- the more I thought about it the more it made sense that they are the same mcpcb footprint- I doubt Hank is using different mcpcb's for sst20, xpl-hi, abd osram cslpm1. That would be a lot of parts. Seems more likely they all fit in the same footprint.

I am going to take off the bezel, glass and optic for the first time in months and evaluate the situation. I have thought about selling the mf01 mini and buying the xpl-hi 5K version, but I would much rather spend $35 on (7) 4000k 5D xpl-hi's from Hank @ intl-outdoor and have an amazing setup on my current mf01 mini!

thank you for the help, I may actually be able to see this through now. What do they say, just take a picture of the mcpcb before I take it apart so I will know how to solder the wires back correctly? Lol.
