Some months ago (I believe it was last year) I purchased something from Going Gear using a credit card.
For online purchases I use a PayPal, or if not; a Virtual Account Number service when possible, generating a card number for each purchase and then closing it when the bill is settled.
The VAN service has just notified me of an attempted unauthorized charge on the VISA card I used on their web site, from:
FT-3001 - MIN-MALL OF AME
No damage is done; the card number was invalidated months ago; but it suggests that the web site or payment processor may have a “leak” somewhere.
I tried contacting Going Gear using their “contact us” form but was unable to get past the CAPTCHA on my office computer here; will try later at home as I cannot find a direct email link.
I’ve purchased several flashlights from them and never had a problem. I’ve actually spoken to Marshal on several occasions when I had questions about a purchase I was making. He was always helpful.
My concern would be, it could be someone fishing for info to hack your actual acct. A friend of my mothers fell for something similar. Obviously your careful since you use a virtual acct service but be really diligent is all I can say.
It’s always possible that the VAN service leaked the number, but if someone were up to no good it would make little sense to leak a “burner” card number that had been automatically cancelled upon first use. It would also be a first for this service which has been very reliable for me so far. Radar antennae up…
Yes, getting my account hacked is a potential concern too.
I responded to the VAN email with an email reply and they confirmed that the card number had been compromised.
I have numerous other active “non-burner” cards that I will now keep a close watch on.
Didn’t have an opportunity to call GG from work on Friday but I did eventually find the “orders@” email address and also used the “contact us” form successfully. No response from either so far.
