Aldi Lightway 20w Torch

I recently bought one of these as it was reduced to £10.

It’s ok, but not as impressive as I was expecting it to be and definately not good enough for the job I wanted it for - locating a chocolate brown spaniel in the dark.

In hindsight it was probably not a good buy.

It’s got a Cree XHP 50 emitter but it’s under driven. It has no reflector as such (it’s white plastic). It has a domed plastic magnifying lens (it zooms). It runs on C cells.

So basically it’s not got a lot going for it! I have been toying with the idea of modding it, but the head doesn’t seem to unscrew. The only way I can think of getting to the emitter and driver is to pull it a part at the zooming joint.

Has anyone got any experience with this torch, or have any suggestions - other than to leave it alone and buy something better?

I suspect it’s a XHP50 clone of some sorts.
I mean, for that price…

Aldi stuff is usually pretty good quality and accurately described

Taken from the Aldi site link

Battery Type: 4 x C-size
Voltage: 6 V
Wattage: 20 W

Luminous efficacy: 50 lm/w
100 % power (period of operation: approx. 7 hours)
20 Watt Cree XHP50 LED chip
Light colour: 5000-8300 K
Luminous flux 1,000 lm +/-10%

Taken from Cree’s site,

As you can see the efficacy is totally wrong, it should be around 122lm/w at 3A.
I am not positive but I don’t think that C cells are 21~22Ah which they would have to be to run for 7 hours at 20w.
Stated lumins around 1000, at that it is only using 1A, 6v * 1a is only 6 watts.
light colour 5000 to 8300 wow are they just sticking any old led in there.

With those glaring, lets say errors, I would just keep walking.
