Diffuser Question (S2+ and in general)

I have two different types of Convoy S2+. One is the current gray body model with rubber tail switch. The other is the green body with metal tail switch. I swapped out the glass lens and reflector on the gray model for one of the diffusers that Convoy sells on their AliExpress store. It’s amazing!

So I went to do the same swap on the green-body S2+. There is a little more space ahead of the threads in that model. The diffuser alone against the O-ring had a little rattle. I contacted Convoy’s AliExpress store to see if I needed a gasket. They told me to use the diffuser and the glass lens together. That solved the extra space issue. So I was wondering. Is it standard to have glass over a diffuser? Is it bad to not have glass over a diffuser? When space isn’t an issue, are there pros and cons either way?

The lens itself kills lumens :::.....more than you’d think . But the effect of a diffuser outweighs any losses and you’d never be able to detect the loss visually .

I’m guessing you’re talking about tir lenses sold by Simon in his Ali express store . I’ve always wanted to try a stripped lens to use on a bike light .

diffuse or not diffuse.. that is the question .

Whether tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and errors of rings beams

Or to take up film against a sea of troublesome artifacts ....

to bake ...or not to bake .

I think so. I bought a 5-pack of the 45-degree diffuser. Using the SST-20 at 2700K with 6x7135, it looks fantastic starting at 10% power.

I did a night hike to test them in a forest with lots of ferns and birch trees. It really lights up the space in front of me and creates a beautiful scene. Versus the smooth and orange-peel reflectors, the loss in reach is noticeable down the trail. The 1% and .1% modes seem less useful. Starting at 10% though, I really like it.

I was just looking for a little theory and general guidance from the experts here at BLF. :slight_smile:

The first FW3A had both a TIR and a lens over it.The later ones didn’t.

An old thread (from Simon) about this issue;

So nobody wants to gush on theory and the perfect way to do it?

So far, I went back to the orange peel with little plastic gasket for the S2+ with more room (the one with green body and metal tail switch). Just going to the orange peel instead of the smooth reflector is a noticeable improvement. My other S2+ is comfortably equipped with the 45-degree optic and no glass lens.

Been over a year since I did this mod. Don't remember exactly how I did it (without removing the pill again), but clearly I removed the original lens. 60 degree lens from Aliexpress. Rattle free.
