The Minoan Prince

A few months ago, a fantastic metallurgist and artist from Russia who goes by the name of Beard_n_Bones (on Instagram and Facebook) had his birthday.

On the day, he offered to do 3 free projects that would peak his interest and asked for suggestions. My suggestion was, of course, a flashlight. Well, he liked it, so we talked and decided on a model, which was the Lumintop Prince in Copper.

I bought a brand new Prince and sent it his way. After some other projects, he finally got round to starting on the Prince. Since I am Greek and half Cretan on my mother’s side, he went with a Minoan theme.

These are the renders of the main idea.

More to follow as the project progresses.

Those horns really stick out a lot.

That's not going to be very pocket friendly.

If they don’t stick out the design isn’t special anymore.
They should out at the front, then it’s a self defense light Smile

Which side is the button?
If at the knurling side, the light isn’t easy to hold.

This somehow reminds me of Dodge's slogan: "Grab life by the horns". LOL

Next you’ll be wanting a custom leather scabbard made for it. Etsy, perhaps?

The work has began. Here are some comments and photos from the artist:

“So, let’s start. What do we have here? Just three body details and a clip. Veeery tight clip). I was thinking about cutting carbon fiber off and make a copper tube on a central part. But… It will be a tube with a 0,6mm wall, and it is too thin for future work. So I deside to make a full new central part, just because it is not a bad idea and because I can.”

“Let’s take some bronze and mill it.”

“Ready))”

“Also, I make a detail for casting (green wax)”

“Next photos will be about wax carving and casting”

Today I received a new message from the artist working on the Minoan Prince! We have the first metal parts!

Here are the comments and photos I received:

“Suddenly, I’m not always have a time or chance to make pictures of process, but now I have some photos to show you. You ‘ve seen the beginning of wax works on previous pictures, and here some more. Working on Minoan head.”

“And now – white bronze casted parts”

It has been some time, through harsh conditions and bad climate, but our artist contacted me today with an update!

Here are the comments and photos I received:

“It is quite difficult to photograph during soldering, especially if you work alone and do not want to spoil anything. Therefore, there will be no soldering process, but immediately after, yes.”

“So, after fire and acid magic, I understood that we have a problem. And it’s called Clip. It is too tight and too cheap. I decided, that it’s not necessary to keep it, and add a lanyard ring to the top. But what just a lanyard is not enough. Let’s make a bead)). Spend some time to make a stamp based on ancient coin image. Shiny))) But it is just a tool. Now let’s take some wax and stamp it.”

“The main idea was make an old archaeological view.”

“And again casting”

“Ready one:”

“And so, this is what we end up with:”

“I did not show and photograph the process of laser engraving of ornaments, as it is boring and harmful for the camera.”

“So, there is little work left on the details, sanding, polishing and patina.”

Did the Minoan civilization have princes? Didn’t they come much later in history?

I don’t think that I’d want that light, but good on him.

Nice art. But does it have a place in the flashlight world? Probably will cost a fortune.

Unexpectedly soon, I received a new update! The finished product! This time, with no comments. The photos speak for themselves.

That is beautiful. Does the artist have a website that we could see his other creations?

He is on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/beard_n_bones/

What I love about his work is that his beads have plasticity and seem to have character. You see them and it feels like you know their disposition.

What a beautiful artistic one off piece.
Looking at his site, the torch in my view is the best by far and looks to be a significant amount of work to get the final result.

I’m surprised its not displayed on his site yet. Smile
