Sofirn SP35 Review (Video)

This is my review of the SP35. I cover the unboxing, beamshots, UI, runtime, and other tests. This is my 2nd review ever, so I hope you all like it.

UPDATE: Barry messaged me saying only the first 100pcs have the shown artifacts in the beam. The reflector has been updated.

Looks like a very good review to me! Nice versatile beamshot-spots! Just be sure to re-visit them with all the new lights you might get in the future & sometimes put the video’s side-by-side  (and make sure the video-settings are the same for both instances) The axis-titles on the runtime-graphs could also perhaps be a bit bigger IMO. Nice current measurements too! I miss those in some other reviews… Make sure to put those nice graphs and measurements as pictures in another (short) written review

Hmm, looks like Sofirn found the right way. Buck driver , nice UI. Id like to see it with 20 degree TIR and >80cri warmer tint LED.

I really wish they used an op reflector in this light, it would of fixed the beam issues. That tail cap bugs me though when it doesn’t line up with the switch. Looks a bit out of place being a larger diameter and not sure it suits the design

Nice review, thanks for measuring the parasitic drain as well.

Is the head glued?
If not would be easy to remove reflector and stipple it or change it out for an orange peel one.
Thanks!

Keith

Thanks for the review. I’ve been wondering about this light and have had it in my cart more than once.

I entirely forgot to dismantle it on video. Unfortunately the bezel is glued, I tried after my turbo test and it wouldn’t budge.

Sometimes I need a vice, vice grips, and heat gun to undo them.

Just to add, the driver has no spring, it’s a brass button with dual springs at the tail.

I struggle putting words on paper which is why I made such a thorough video. Don’t think I’ll make a written review. I also run a flashlight business and being the only worker I’m extremely busy.

The graphs were the default ones made by the app “ceilingbounce”. I’ll see how much extra time it takes to make my own graph.

I appreciate your feedback, thank you

Nice to see the reviews filtering out.

The beam isn’t as bad as I expected. It would be nice to see an OP reflector smooth it out, but I could live with it. The tint is ok, too, for 6500k.

I also agree about the tail cap design, whose “ears” don’t make much sense in the absence of the need to accommodate a tail switch. I wonder if the ones from the Astrolux EC lights would fit?

The idea of full control over power levels is tantalizing, but I can’t help not pointing out the irony of producing a light where ATR is promoted as a prominent feature, and then not having it functional in the shipping product.

Should also note that the language in the manual indicates that the glued “sealed” head is a feature, not a bug, and tampering with it is grounds to void the warranty.

Now curious about how the 5000mAh battery will measure up, and whether it will charge with a C-to-C cable.

And for once, I’d like to see a manufacturer dare to introduce a light in something other than Boring Black, or at least offer a different color option from the start.

The beam isn’t too bad but it does annoy me, can’t handle black spots in a beam. You can see the led square

I’ve been asked to review the 5000mAh 21700 by Barry, so I’ll be onto that when it arrives. It was going to be sent in another free SP35 but I’ve asked to review the SF47T, so fingers crossed.

I have suggested an OP reflector to Barry, hopefully they listen. As an EDC model an OP reflector makes more sense.

Once fixed the ATR is set at 45, 55, and 65°C, just wish the temp limit could be changed to those three options. 45°C is a little low

Tint isn’t accurate on that video, it’s cooler. Camera white balance was set to Daylight but still a little warm. Started out making demos with a custom setting but found the 4000K lights to be too cool, so just stuck with the preset.

I see I can fine tune the preset, so I should play around with it, it’s a new camera

In person, how does it compare to a 6500k SC31B? I have one of those, and I mostly find it tolerable only because I got it cheap and treat it as a backup, or to take with me on a trip and wouldn’t really miss if it was lost. Otherwise, it’s too cold for my taste.

Very much the same, both 6500K. This SP35’s corona is yellow though. Hopefully they’ll give a 5000K option in a later batch

[UPDATE: Barry messaged me saying only the first 100pcs have the shown artifacts in the beam. The reflector has been updated.]

Maybe a dumb question, but if I was to purchase one of these, how would I know it would come with an "updated" reflector? (or is it safe to assume the 'first 100' have already been distributed? )

No idea, this is just what I’ve been told. If I look on the sofirn store and AliExpress, they’re well over 100 units shipped.

I suggested changing to an OP reflector, and Barry said we’ll wait and see what the new reflector looks like. Unfortunately the head is glued so it’s not so easy to change it if it’s got the old one.

Thanks for the confirmation. That means I will hope for a 5000k edition as well.

Between the broken ATR and reflector update, I’m not going to get my hopes up that the USB-C port is properly implemented either, and lacks the resistors to enable charging via a C-to-C cable.

Perhaps a theoretical “v3” will result in a fully-finished product.

Software sees frequent iterations because it is easy to iterate. Not sure why some companies take that approach to hardware, and make things harder on themselves and their customers.

I couldn’t find any dimensions listed for this light. Could you provide bezel Dia, reflector ID, tube Dia, and aprox length? Did I hear you say in the video that this shares a reflector with the SP31?

EDIT: Found the sales thread on BLF has some info about the light overall, but I still want to know more about the reflector size

28mm Head x 126mm Length

Bezel is glued so I can’t tell you unfortunately

External bezel opening at least?
Thanks

Measured the front opening where the glass is and it’s 21.4mm
