[Review] Magicshine MTL40 (White|Amber|Red|Blue, 1 x 18650 ) - Multi-Color Flashlight with TIR lens

The flashlight was sent to me by Magicshine for review.
Here's the product's link: Magicshine MTL40

T
he flashlight comes in a very nice matte black / orange cardboard box.

Inside the box, one finds the following accessories:

  • Silicone diffuser
  • Micro-USB charging cable
  • Replacement o-ring
  • Adjustable wrist lanyard

Additionally, the MTL40 comes with a nylon sheath.
The sheath's flap is secured via velcro, while the back side has a normal belt loop.

The flashlight comes with black matte anodization and is e-switch operated.

Its slim body is covered by light knurling for better grip.

The MTL40 utilizes a quad emitter setup (White, Amber, Red, Blue) paired with a TIR reflector.

The head has some chunky crenelations which protect the TIR lens.

The e-switch is mounted in the lower part of the head and has a nice tactile feel.

The Magicschine logo is translucent, which allows the indicator LED to shine through it.
The indicator LED is used for showcasing the battery's charge level:

  • Steady green: 75% - 100%
  • Pulsing green: 75% - 50%
  • Steady red: 50% - 25%
  • Pulsing red: 25% - 0%

The rear mounted switch is mechanical and is used solely for turning on/off the power to the flashlight.
It's forward clicky, which means that it supports momentary on.

The switch boot sits flush with the metal flaps, which allows the MTL40 to tail-stand.

The tail threads are square cut but non-anodized.
The head-side threads seems to be glued in place.

It's worth noting that the flashlight uses a double tube design.

The head's bezel is not glued and can be easily taken apart.

Here's how the TIR looks from the back side.
It's basically 4 individual lenses fused into a single one.

And here's a closeup of the quad emitter board.
As you can see, the MTL40 uses the following emitters:

  • XPL-HI for White
  • 3 x XP-E2 for Amber, Red, Blue

The head includes two slots that allow the TIR to align perfectly.
Those slots also make sure that the TIR won't rotate while screwing the head and thus twisting the dome off the emitters.

A nice bonus is the fact that the flashlight comes with a dual pocket clip.
Thanks to it, the flashlight can be clipped both ways inside a pocket.

The MTL40 also comes with a 18650 cell with built-in charging.

The cell is rated with 3500mAh of capacity and can be recharged with a regular microUSB cable.
Once plugged in, there's a little indicator LED that notifies the user for the battery's state (Green = Full , Red = Charging)

User Interface

The MTL40 comes with a pretty straight forward UI.
Below you can see all the supported actions of its firmware:

Turn on/off: Single press of rear switch.
Momentary on: Half press and hold of rear switch.
Mode cycle of same emitter: Single press.

White: Low > Mid > High > Turbo
Amber: Low > High
Red: Low > High > Rapid Strobe > SOS
Blue: Low > High > Police Strobe (double blinking)

Switch between emitters: Double press ( White > Amber > Red > Blue )
Strobe (White): Long press.

The flashlight has mode memory. It will always turn on in the last used White output level.

Output

My measurements were taken with the 18650 battery that arrived with the flashlight.

As can be seem, the flashlight is able to push almost 920 lumen in Turbo.
I don't have any equipment that can evaluate the output of colorful emitters, so I've not disclosed any measurements of the XP-E2 emitters.

Output regulation

Here's a graph showing the output regulation of the MTL40 in a 20 minute Turbo run.

It seems that the flashlight can sustain its full output for 10 minutes.
Past the 10 minute mark, the output drops linearly to 600 in order to keep the temperature of the flashlight in a tolerable level.

Interesting light there! The run time looks nice too. Nice review :+1:

Looked up the US site and couldn’t find it though. Also wondered if the diffuser is typically included? I’m guessing they are catching up on the US site. Oh… and I didn’t “spin the ‘free prize’ wheel” :stuck_out_tongue:

Regarding the diffuser, I’m sure that it’s part of the standard package.
As for the availability in the US store, I think the flashlight will become available pretty soon (I had been told that the MTL40 is the company’s latest release).
If you’re interested, I can shoot a PM to the sale’s representative of Magicshine.

I like it…… I don’t like it……I like it…….I don’t like it.
Nah, I like it ! strange beast, depending on price I might be interested maybe not right away though.

Interested :person_facepalming: depending on price . Perhaps a group buy to make it more price friendly?

Sure
If more people are interested, I could talk to the manufacturer to organize a group buy for BLF.

Great first look. Thanks for posting int.

I am interested.

I’d like to see how it compares to Olight Freyr.

Are there other similar lights to the MTL40 and Freyr?

Now we know where Olight got their idea from or who is working for Olight.

I'm interested also.

I was hoping more people will be interested in GB...:(

It seems like a unique light. I am surprised their isnt more interest as well.

I will purchase regardless. That is if they ever stock it in the USA store.

I have one, willing to sell it.

PM coming

Nice review a a unique light. What do you mean by police strobe? Does it flash red and blue at the same time? Can that police mode be saved in memory so that it can turn on with a single click?
