Possible standoff in progress near my family's house

It sounds like there is a standoff in progress near our house right now.

Someone on a loudspeaker said something like, "Come out peacefully, XXXXXXX."
(I censored out the name that they said.)

I heard a little more than that, but that sentence I remember pretty well, and it sums up the situation.

I was walking from the house to my room.

My room is in a detached garage.

I love watching horror movies, and not much scares me, but when I realized what was going on and how close it was to me, I became genuinely scared.

I'm going to stay in my room for tonight.

I hope everyone will be okay.

Very creepy!

I texted my mom and talked to her right before I created this thread.

She's in North Carolina, staying with my older sister.

I talked to my mom at 1:45AM PST, which is 4:45AM EST.

She was awake when I texted her, and she called me on my phone.

She then called two of our neighbors that we're friend with, and left messages about what I heard.

So maybe tomorrow we'll know what happened.

...

We live just outside the city limits of Palm Desert, so the person on the loudspeaker was probably from the Sheriff's Department as this is their jurisdiction.

Have you had a standoff near your house before? Seems familiar, or maybe it was someone on another forum.

Hope none of the good guys got caught up in it. The World is going insane. I would be freaking out too, because if the bullets start flying they can easily cause collateral damage to innocent bystanders.

My mom went on Nextdoor, which is a social networking website focused on people's neighborhoods.

About 10 people are talking about the situation.

There is a helicopter near the person of interest's house, and that's what I heard--someone on a loudspeaker in the helicopter apparently.

I didn't actually hear the noise of the helicopter engine/rotors.

The person of interest's house is actually not that close to our house, so that makes me feel better.

Both the police and sheriff's department are working together at the scene.

I feel sorry for those that live close to the scene because the loudspeaker must be pretty loud over there if I can hear it so clearly way over here.

My mom said, "Nothing exciting ever happens when I'm at home."  (because she's on vacation right now.)

I wonder if I'll be able to fall asleep when I finally get tired.

Nope, this is a first in my lifetime.

It's quite unsettling, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Watching horrible events on the news doesn't usually faze me much, but when stuff goes down near me, I don't like it.

Well, I got hungry, and came back to the house to eat.

(I don't keep any food in my room.)

I was outside for not very long, and it was pretty quiet.

After I eat, I think I'll create a Nextdoor account and see what the latest is.

When I'm in the house, I spend most of my time in the living room, and it's way more comfortable there than in my room, so the fact I got hungry was actually good.

Might be safer in the house. I dunno. Unless, I forgot if you have a cellar or not. Gotta bring food. And flashlights.

Apparently there was no problem arresting this guy, else you’d probably have heard something.

Good idea to be careful in such cases.

Smile, you cannot kill them all.

Okay, I have an account with Nextdoor now.

It seems like a cool website.

My mom and sister have had accounts for quite a while, and they tell me what is going on in our neighborhood.

When I created my account, they asked for my name.

I gave them a fake name, Michael Myers, because I don't want anyone to know who I am if I decide to post on there.

According to Nextdoor...

There was a flash bomb about two hours ago.

Also, two hour ago, there were six gunshots.

About an hour ago, someone posted that dispatch told them the situation was a a possible 245... assault with deadly weapon and that the suspect was barricaded in.

...

That's all for now.

No cellar here.

Our house is single story only, and between my family and myself, we have 8-10 pretty good flashlights, and I have a bunch of not-so-great flashlights as well.

Looks like the standoff is over.

From Nextdoor...

The authorities told the suspect that they were going to throw a gas bomb into his house and that it would be uninhabitable for three days.  They threw it in, it made a very loud noise and he immediately came out of the house.

...

The above happened about half an hour ago.

...

(I presume that he got arrested once he left his house.

That's generally what happens.)

Yay! Sounds like they didn’t have to bulldoze any adjacent houses or anything!

Since I think this part of the incident is over, it's nice to have at least some closure before I try to get some rest.

I'm still kinda shaken up, but I'm also getting sleepy (again) so I'm going back to my room and getting ready for bed.  :-)

I’ve never had that situation happen around here but, that would be a time to turn off all the lights, grab a weapon of your choice, and sit quietly somewhere outside with a good view of your surroundings. I am not very good at playing run and hide. Big Smile

Eternal looks quite interesting! Dig the suit he wears. Especially that lance/probe thing that shoots out of the suit on the arm area. Hmmm gonna give the game a go. Evil

Yep… that is how it works in my parts of the world too. We NEVER take a knife or baseball bat to a gun fight, potential gun fight, or any kind of fight for that matter. Wink

Here in Missouri we don’t have to let them in first. I’m sure it would help though. Wink

Same! We had a dangerous prisoner escape in the county one time. They suspected he came into our more rural area of the TN mountains. They were warning us mountain people to lock cars and doors so he couldn’t find an easy getaway vehicle. Facepalm Well….mountain people don’t lock doors…. LOL

I wanted to meet him and give him back to the Sheriff’s Department…but it never worked out… Crying he was eventually caught.

Actually I just remembered that I also experienced a stand-off just not too long ago. Yes I was outside again in the backyard late at night relaxing. Laying in the hammock and soaking in the moon rays.

All of sudden I heard a commotion like some kinda bassy growling noise. It became more intense and it was just coming from over the fence in this wooded walkway/alley kind thing about 50’ away. Looked over the fence and it was a gaze of raccoons and surfeit of skunks! Apparently, skunks and raccoons don’t get along at all. Well they departed they merry way and all’s well that ends well. Smile
