What's with the bad punctuation and misspelled words lately????

No, I am not an English major.

There seems to be a trend forming where people purposely misspell words and use writing shortcuts that would get you kicked out of any school if you used them in a term paper.

gotta instead of got to

helluva instead of hell of a

Kinda instead of kind of

Nuff said instead of enough said

and countless others.

Don’t get me wrong, I do it to some degree myself but it seems that more and more people are doing it and the people that are doing are increasing their usage. What I find interesting is that is many cases, the shortened word is not even that much shorter.

I somehow have a feeling if the trend continues, “nuff” will have to eventually make it into the Webster’s dictionary (does it even still exist?)

I have noticed the same across a variety of online formats, mainly forums and discord channels. In a chat group, I can kind of understand the colloquial nature of speech. But it should be slightly more formal on a forum, I think.

You’re observing the evolution of language, the informal version of the phrases are used for context the same way they would be in normal speech.
For example, i believe ‘gotta’ is more suggestive than the instructive ‘got to’ and can be used to avoid a conveyance of assumed authority.

“You gotta do it.” is a lot less aggressive than “You’ve got to do it.”.

Again, I do it myself but I still consider it a bad habit. If not for any other reason, it teaches the new generation that proper spelling should not be something you strive to accomplish.

Notawhack is prime suspect in my mind. I think he’s actually smarter than he lets on

It’s the same in german, btw. ‘Eines’, ‘eine’, ‘einer’ all became ‘nen’. We’re asymptotically(*) aproaching a level where literates and illiterates cannot be distinguished anymore :person_facepalming: .

*) hopefully!

I’m glad most of you don’t know Portuguese language and don’t read the comments/posts on different social media platforms  You’d be shocked with the “evolution”/”bastardization” of the language (some on purpose, some because people don’t know more, and education on writing lacks/lacked :person_facepalming:

One day we will be communicating via emoticons only!

:D :ARROW-RIGHT: }D :ARROW-RIGHT: }) :ARROW-RIGHT: :| :ARROW-RIGHT: :( :ARROW-RIGHT:  :ARROW-RIGHT: :TIRED:

What’s spelling got to do with education these day’s.
It’s all about politics, being woke and progressive thinking.
You do not need to spell
Or think for yourself in the new world.
They just train you to be a good little slave.

Its actually sad that the American-English language is disappearing. Don’t forget the the founding fathers spoke a much more proper form of English, so it deteriorated significantly since the 1700’s. I can only imagine what the language will be like in 2100 or 2200.

I find it strange there are so many different versions of English in America between regions.

I find it strange there are so many different versions of English in America between regions. Also, why doesn’t Europe speak a common language by now. ( besides English)

language changes all the time

this is just informality, some of which will last and most will fade away and morph to other fads.

I would not say “all the time.”

Also, because a person have a poor vocabulary, it doesn’t mean the language changed. It just means they have a bad vocabulary,

I will not take that sentence seriously , about we in Europe speaking a “common language”

Yall’r a buncha old people.

Don’t people in the EU intermingle?

And that’s a bad thing?

Speeeeeeed; LIM (less is more) :exclamation:
