Olight O-pen Sucks

So, I have 3 opens, original, the one w/ lockout, and the new one with the laser.

Nice feel, nice light – writes HORRIBLY. Literally the worst actual pen I’ve ever had. Anyone know a GOOD refill to put in this outrageously priced pen?

Olight USA offers a pack of three ink refills free of charge (normally it costs about US$10), but you need to order something in order to get the free ink refills. Cash

Since all the pens are equally horrible at writing, I was hoping someone knew if the cartridge is a standard size and I can buy one that writes consistently.

Interesting. My OPen Mini writes fabulously.

It’s weird, they’re smooth with good resistance, then the ball stops turning. It’s like there’s wax or something on the paper, but I’ve tried all sorts of paper. Maybe I’m just a greasy Italian.

Mine (purple Open Pro) writes pretty well. For refills, maybe try asking on Reddit, Olight seems more popular there.

My O’pen Mini had a tiny bit of the red wax protective cap residue at the point and paper fibers did accumulate there until I cleaned it off.

Odd, a bunch of pens I got from the bank (freebies, with keychains, door-openers, etc.) as well as some pens a realtor friend gave me, all have the same problem. They tend to “skip”, as if writing on tainted paper or something.

All my old cheap Bics, PaperMates, etc., still write fine on the same paper, so it’s definitely the pens.

I wonder if by chance a Space Pen refill would work?
Youd have a pretty great pen then.

My preferred EDC pen/refill ink type is Pilot's Gel in a .5mm tip. I suggest searching through JetPens comprehensive online store to match up the size and style of refill you'll need for your OPen. The link takes you directly to the Refills page. I hope that helps!

Found the above video clip showing that Schmidt Mega Line 4876M can be used as an ink refill for the Olight OPen.

Another substitute is this Lamy M22.

Both of them are not cheap. Will continue searching for some cheaper generic ink refills.

I agree with Rusy Joe’s statement.

Olight’s frequent use of proprietary batteries and sealed flashlights with non replaceable batteries is not only a turn off, it’s really damaging to the hobby.

I recently took apart an Olight i5TEOS, and it’s not friendly at all in there. The only way to get into it was prying out and damaging the plastic lens a little. Driver and LED star were installed in a basically permanent way, and doesn’t leave much room to work with, with everything needing to be shoved in through the bottom. Original LED was a horrible blue tint. I still might be able to save it and get a working high CRI flashlight out of it, but I definitely wouldn’t get another Olight flashlight with the intent of opening it up.

There’s a FB group for olight modders, though it’s got more chatter than modding. Some mod work looks respectable.

wow how mature BLF has become these days. nothing wrong with their lights, robust and good quality.. if anything sucks its imalent, exploding lights in your hand.. haha Big Smile

I agree its kinda sucks ucant use any type of battery but i think they do this to protect the users so that nobody will dig up some old battery and then something bad happens or they will complain why lumens is so low when battery is bad quality.. It hasnt stopped me to enjoy the lights. Magnetic charging is a good way im surprised not more offer this option.

Thanks, that’s the info I was looking for. Seems like there are some decent options on amazon that probably drop right in. I think I will put orange ink in my orange open and black in the black.

Too bad the pro doesn’t have lockout, they will probably do a pro 2 next that does, which will confirm their lameness…

Olight aren’t meant to be hobby lights though – they are more for your average Joe who just want a semi decent light without being some sort of flashlight geek like us lol!

Olight’s only issue used to be bad emitters. That was fixable with emitter swaps, which were possible if difficult. Now the proprietary cell requirements are a complete no-go for me and many others. I get that it’s their way to offer certain features while maintaining size and form factor, but others have shown you can accomplish similar goals with minimal sacrifices and still not require a $20+ proprietary battery to do it. So given the way Olight markets (which has also proven unpopular in these circles), it really feels like a move to the Gilette Razor model.

What’s interesting is Zebralight gets a lot less flak for mod-ability of lights compared to Olight. Granted, ZL has responded to enthusiasts occasionally (SC64c LE is a notable example) and doesn’t require proprietary cells. They also don’t do aggressive social media marketing or the annoying “flash sale” model. But that doesn’t change the fact that mod potential for ZL is at least as bad as most Olights.

Oh, and I really like the Obulb. I gave one to my daughter; she plays with it in the bathtub and drops it all the way down the stairs, not to mention attempting to chew on it. Still going great.

I’m guessing the lawsuit for the olight that blew up in a man’s mouth has a lot to do with olight’s proprietary batteries…so kind of hard to blame them.

I did buy their LEP despite the proprietary batter, but no plans to buy others. Obviously a non issue with the pens.

Ordered these, i’ll report if they fit.

I have 4 of the O’pen Pro models which I got on the 1st promotion offer at $38 each. My wife grabbed a blue one and likes it. Uses it to chase the dogs across the living room avoiding that green bug from crawling up their leg. My Mini and her ink cartridges both work fine. I will be gifting the ones I have left to family. The included 3 extra refills is a nice touch.

“Anyone know a GOOD refill to put in this outrageously priced pen?”

Got a caliper?
Give us some measurements and I’ll bet someone here can match it up with a good refill.
It does look like a Fisher refill might fit.
One of the Fisher refills are close to Parker refills but without the plastic bit on the end that works with the clicky bits.
They do ship an end adapter so it will work with the Parker clones.

I find the Fisher refills write on most stuff, but have a bad habit of making a glob of ink at the tip that eventually finds it’s way onto the paper or me (whichever is more inconvenient at the time).

All the Best,
Jeff

dthrckt, the two ink refills you found on Amazon look too long.

You need a shorter one, such as Lamy M22 (M), which also costs about US$7 each.

I am going to buy a few Olight products, including the Swivel, during the upcoming Halloween Sale next week, and get a free pack of three ink refills, each pack costs US$9.90.
