Review: ON THE ROAD X5 Pro, 26650 (SFT40, 6500k)

Thanks Joe nice review

Seriously tempted by this. I wonder if there are any codes

I have to be honest - it’s not a good deal. I wouldn’t pay more than 40 dollars for it. A Jin Heng JKK90 with SFT40 has nearly the same UI and costs less than 30 dollars in China. It also out throws it at 1km. The only thing you’re missing is USB charging.

I’ve built one reflector light with the SFT-40, and it also has had those dark ring around the corona. Wonder if that is coincidence or if this LED is actually resposible.

However - nice review, thanks :-).

I don’t understand where people are coming from saying these emitters don’t focus well. Flat emitters are the easiest theoretically to focus, since there is only one optic. The issues with focusong flat emitters generally has to do with their apparent size. Most commonly, flat emitters that we use range from 1-4mm², where as domed emitters range from ~4-20mm². Compare an XPG2 beam to an XPLHI in the same reflector, and the beam quality and spot size will be similar. The only advantage domes have is they smooth the corona a bit because of the distortion of the square die they generate.

The SFT40 is potentially the best ‘bigger’ flat emitter for beam quality, since the corners are notched due to the bond wire pads.

Reflectors that have a large flat bottom often produce a beam with a sharply defined hotspot that can create an illusion of a dark ring around it. I’d bet if you scanned a lux meter from the center outwards you wouldn’t actually find a depression, but rather a sharp step down.

I’ll give them this: that is a pretty intriguing reflector design. I’ve never seen one with two separate cones in one reflector to produce a narrow hotspot, spill, and a wide hotspot.

Oh it’s tremendous spill and throw!!

I have an “on the road” bike light and can confirm these are well made products with excellent heatsinking properties and decent drivers. Unlike some budget brands these are built solid in and out, typically they use integrated shelves for heatsinking and have a very good heft. They’re worth the extra expense over typical budget brands.

is that you throw hound? nice review.

Haven’t said that, just stated my observation. No, it’s not an illusion, it was visible in beamshots I took. Maybe the SFT40 just doesn’t fit well in a reflector designed for the SST40, maybe there’s another problem. I simply do not know.

It is.
