Recommendations for UV torch

Hello,

A while back I bought this Convoy S2 UV torch: Konvoi S2 Grau 7135*5 Treiber 365nm Lila UV Taschenlampe Fluoreszenz Sterilisation Sale - Banggood Deutschland Mobile-arrival notice

It works great.

My friend wants a UV torch too - is the Convoy S2 I linked above still a good buy (it has gone up in price since I bought mine) or are there better deals now (on other torches or the same one) I should consider?

Thanks a lot!

It is cheaper from Simon.

Thank you!

I recommend JAXMAN UV Light. It is expensive more than convoy. but it worth to buy it if you use UV light often. Just for the toy, S2 UV is also great.

The one Simon has now is different than what you have……I think. I say I think because he changed up a couple times, but I also can’t see the product in the link. In the US there is a somewhat ridiculous patent that is currently preventing many UV lights that have included filter lenses from being sold/shipped here…by reputable vendors and manufacturers, anyway. Simon has chosen to honor this, as has Banggood…dangit. But the S2+ is as good or slightly better than the older versions.

If I were you and if you don’t mind the slightly larger size, I’d consider his S12 UV with triple emitters and a 21700 battery platform. Lots more light, which can be great unless you’re using it up close all the time like inspecting IDs, money, etc. Since UV emitters are battery hogs and need higher voltage, a good 21700 cell will provide a lot of benefit for these compared to any 18650 cell on the market.

There are very good AA/14500 UV lights now, too….Sofirn has one, as does Lumintop.

For longer use, a buck/boost driver is ideal for UV emitters but those get expensive fast and I think may only be available in grossly overpriced rebadge models from the rockhound sites (here in the US anyway).

Nothing wrong with the S2+, though, great light and he drives them smartly as far as current goes.

I suggest getting one with the Nichia UV LED, like this one from Convoy: Convoy S2+ UV 365nm led flashlight ,with nichia LED in side

I got mine many years ago, and also installed a ZWB2 filter. The Nichias have very little visible light. I didn’t notice much of an improvement after I installed the filter, which is a testament to how good they are.

When did he start offering those in purple?? I see it has the rubber S2 switch so he must have them done specifically for the UV. Neat. I’ve bought and set up like five S2+ violet hosts with UV just so people would have the purple they liked/expected for that kind of light. More expensive that way but a little nicer with the metal switch.

I liked the LG emitters he had more than the Nichia, but with the filter the light is pretty much identical in that regard.

I swapped my black UV’s pill into a purple host, with ZWB2 filter. Kicks arse.

In fact, just used it today to glow some peanut-butter.

I think you might have some “fluff” in your peanut butter. Mine doesn’t glow. The purple S2+ UV has been available from Simon for over a year and maybe longer. And yes shipped to the US he won’t install the filter. But he’ll sell you one filter cheap. If you want more than one they cost a little more.

Check out the “youtube videos” thread here, one posted of making peanut butter glow…it’s really odd but a few of us have made it happen with different brands and UV lights. Weird!

I saw that the reviews for purple went back to last summer where ali cuts off. Twice over the last several years I’d asked Simon if he would offer a UV model with the purple S2+ host or some other purple host and he said no. I didn’t know he changed his mind. I guess there are a lot more purple hosts in the market these days but for awhile it seemed like only the cheap UV lights and the S2+. Even if it might equate with cheap-o lights, I like the idea of differentiating the UV models with purple. I wish Simon would sell all of his UV models here, just with clear glass to satisfy the patent restriction, unless he has a contract or something with Gardner not to sell them here (possible).

Wellp, that’s what you get for buying the cheap stuff.

I got mines without the ZWB2, but picked up a pair separately, maybe AX, don’t recall.

I picked up this one recently, and it’s nice if you want a light for more than one purpose. You do have to time the triple click right to get into UV mode though:

Also, here’s a helpful reference I found while I was searching:

Okay I watched a video or two and I see you have to hold the UV light close to the peanut butter for 3 to 5 seconds. And then it glows for 2 to 3 seconds. Found it also works on almond butter and chopped walnuts. Probably many other nuts also. And the kernel from inside squash seeds. And a little bit of the stem of a whole grain rolled oat. Now I have to test all of my food. Edit, the video I watched didn’t actually show the phenomenon. A lady with an obviously cheap UV light demonstrated what to do. I just did some more testing with the S2+. From 4 ft away, one second on the peanut butter jar makes it Glow for almost 4 seconds.

It’s a strange phenomenon!

I was very suspicious at first until I tried it on my all natural Costco peanut butter, and sure enough it glowed for a second or 2. :open_mouth:

Yeh. I opened the jar and shined inside, to rule out funky plastic. It’s the PB itself.

I did the same, fun stuff, no fluff.
