Hi, never used a chromebook myself, but basically you’re trapped in a google-only environment, so you have to use their various online services to store your data.
You’ll have to be more specific about what you mean by “read-only”
That is completely untrue. Generally, if you can do it in a browser, you can do it on a chromebook. You can use Microsoft Office 365 (online), and imgur on a chromebook.
Just don’t plan on installing any local apps unless you really want to hax0r the crap out of it.
Can you install an alternative web browser on ChromeOS?
You can add the Brave app to chromebook. I just attached a picture to an email on chromebook with no problem.

You can install Linux instead of chrome with crouton, and android apps work on it. Beware of brave. It’s spyware. https://spyware.neocities.org/articles/brave.html kiwi browser is what I use, it can use chrome extensions.
