How about a “x1” button?

That way you don’t add one or subtract one—you can only multiply by one.  alt=" />

Big Smile We do have an x0 button though, it’s labelled Report. Innocent

Is it possible to adjust the amount of padding given to quotes? Even those tiny quotes you nested take up tons of space relative to how much text is actually present.

Sorry for replying to the wrong post. Didn’t want to quote that gigantic nest haha

I don’t really want to become more like Reddit.

Please don’t turn this forum into yet another social media platform

You don’t need to please everyone for your opinion to be valid. It’s a flashlight forum where political discussions are not allowed.

I think you should read more of the thread before commenting.

Hi there, definitely not a -1 button, this isn’t Reddit and I don’t want it to turn into a contest where people try to make the wittiest (i.e. most inflammatory and insulting) comments in search of an upvote, or where unpopular opinions get downvoted even if they’re perfectly in line with the rules. Reddit seems to bring out the worst in many many users, and I’m convinced that there’s something in their up/down voting system that triggers that herd mentality.

I think I have read enough of the thread to be able to comment.

And this is why I believe the +1 button shouldn’t exist, in this case either my comment or yours would receive more amount of +1’s, rendering one comment more valid than the other by popular opinion, and thus creating a somewhat harsh environment for the other user.

Do this repeatedly day after day and people will eventually stop posting about the not so interesting content, such as modding $10 flashlights instead of showing off a collection of their 35 different hank lights. They even had to create r/Hanklights to control the flood in r/flashlight.

Anyways, I do think there is place for a r/BudgetLights to exist, for those who don’t like the classic forum format.

So this would be an “anonymous” plus one system at the bottom of an individual response box? I guess you would get slightly more participation in some threads. I’m not sure how a few anonymous likes are going to be all that helpful though. I do sometimes look at them on YouTube videos but there you can see how many people watched the video and liked it and disliked it.

You can't compare the big flashlight in the sky to the little flashlight in your hand.

Youtube ditched the dislike button because propaganda / social engineering / demoralization vehicles were getting disliked into oblivion. You’re not supposed to know that the average person isn’t drinking the kool-aid.

Okay well the button is still there but yeah it looks like it doesn’t work. So it looks like it’s just an experiment and they are not entirely sure they want to get rid of it yet.

The button is still there only to customize the algorithm but not to show the rating. So now if a video is promoting a scam or spreading false information all they have to do is to disable the comments for the content to be one way only.

Works for me. Thumbs Up
I do not use Reddit & have never even been to their site. My comment was made sarcastically as I personally see no need for a + 1 button. Things seem to work pretty well like they are now. Wink

Hi everyone, thanks for the good discussion and observations. So to recap:

A voting system with ±1 for threads or posts will definitely not be implemented here.

At most I might consider adding some kind of a “Thanks” button.

However, manual “I agree” posts or even posts just to say thanks are not discouraged either. We’re mostly all humans here, and a bit of normal friendly human interaction is never a bad thing.

OK, but I think that it’s still too much.

OK, I can reduce it. Maybe to 3?

I think 2 is enough, but a nice feature would be that the quotations link back to the original comment if more context is needed.

Did you notice in my test earlier in this thread that there is a Snip link to expand the whole thing when clicked? That’s probably about as much functionality as I can coax out of the site module responsible for quoting.

Please do not add + and – or likes (and or dislikes), It turns into contests and post hunting (like or dislike the person always +1 based on built up impression of the person)
I appreciate forums that have not turned into reddit, youtube or other plaforms that do this knowing it invites commenting for likes, popularity,
competition and rallying around same idea post or threads (this can be quite dangerous even if it appears benign and slow).

I think the biggest problem with the invisible like/dislikes on Youtube is that I can’t always spot which videos will waste my time anymore. For example, some reviews on Youtube are not reviews, they are just footage of some person reading a specs sheet, or worse, text-to-speech reading marketing points. It was easier to spot these videos before because they had highly negative vote ratios. Tutorial videos also vary wildly in quality. Now you often have to waste time actually clicking on videos to find out if they are garbage.. Screw the idiots in Youtube’s upper management!

I think we need a “Please Delete” button. We’d hook it to brad’s thermostat in post #4…

One Bulb to blind them,
One Bulb to bring them all,
