ALL THINGS BUDGET KNIVES

Thanks for the heads up. I just purchased one for the novelty of it. Anyways, SOG is a good brand.

Just another knife and lite in paradise.
Nice site, thanks. :sunglasses:

They have some real gems if you look hard enough. Can’t say enough good things about my vintage SOG Vulcan Tanto (san mai ATS34 blade). But this flashlight/blade combo is kind of rubbing me the wrong way. Knives are meant to take blows. Looks like those LEDs could get easily destroyed. But then… just $10, so not much of a loss.

That LeDuck knife is cool looking. I have a old Oudoor Edge Wedge II - good knife.

Yes, the flashlight//knife combo thing is gimmicky, no doubt. But since it is from a known manufacturer I will blow $10 on it for fun and giggles when buddies come to visit. The light only puts out 25 lumens, so really it’s only going to light up the tip of the blade. LOL.

Hmmm. Probably has strobe and SOS, too. :confounded:

Yes, you can get real D2 in $20-something pocket knives from Ganzo, Petrified Fish, QSP, Kubey, and more. They might not have the heat treatment that a much more expensive American knife has but we’ve seen that they reach a decent hardness. In my personal experience with these brands, they hold a decent edge and are often on par with more expensive budget brands like Steel Will. That’s fantastic.

Of course, those companies are pioneers. They are building their brands by bringing quality products to the market at a very competitive price. How much more expensive is that D2 or its processing cost versus the inexpensive 8Cr13Mov that permeates the market? The question is why the counterfeiter would pay that difference. There is a reason that D2 is one of the most frequently faked steels on the market today. Usually, the better fakes turn out to be 8Cr13Mov.

I’ll refer you to a Gocomma knife that made a big splash here a year or so ago. It was stamped D2 and I doubted it. Some people here who had the knife argued that it was. So I bought one. I used the heck out of it. It did pretty well. I could see how someone would assume that the D2 stamp was real. However, it didn’t hold up as well as my Ganzo D2 and was easier to sharpen. It acted like a decent 8Cr13Mov. It didn’t take long for my suspicions to be confirmed. That knife turned out to be a rebranded Petrified Fish CF-1815. It was indeed 8Cr13Mov.

Civivi’s reputation exists for a reason. They’ve brought some amazing flipper-tab knives to market for decent prices. Actions have been good. The blades come sharp and are nice and thin behind the edge. Their 9Cr18Mov has an excellent heat treatment and can cut circles around examples from companies like Schrade or CRKT. Fit and finish on the ones I’ve had are on par with much more expensive knives. They’ve also had very clean internals compared with some other budget knives. They stole the spotlight and have become the gold standard for a lot of people. Of course, I’ve also had excellent knives from Kizer, Bestech, etc.

For what I understand, this is either Civivi’s first or second thumb-stud knife. Does the Governor run on washers? Thumb studs are a different ball game in my experience. Things really have to match up with my hand to get the “wow” factor. I’ve been meaning to check out the Governor. If your opinion doesn’t warm up and you feel like dumping it at a generous price, message me.

7 - 8 years ago 440C was as fashionable as D2. They stamped everything with that. I guess Ganzo also started to use 440C (or its equivalent) for the same reason. Since I hate when I see D2 blades developing rust spots after a sweaty summer day I prefer the fake stainless versions in this low budget category if the edge retention is close enough (the Y-Start JIN02 is a good example).

Gocomma sells many rebranded products at a surprisingly good price. That folder was one of those along with the Gocomma version of the SRM Land 910plus. By the way that “Gocomma” folder could be some sort of generic pattern because you can find it under the TIGEND brand too.

Now there’s a whole new meaning to “don’t point your flashlight towards people’s face”!

At first I thought this is a fake SOG (it’s not listed at SOG’s official site), but it’s legit (listed at bladehq but out of stock) and they have several knives with leds like this one.

Yes, Civivi has a great reputation. I was excited to get my first one. The Governor does run on bronze washers, no bearings. I prefer thumb studs over a flipper tab, but most of my knives have the flipper tab, because most folding knives these days are made flipper tab only.

I have contacted Civivi via email, to find out if I can send my knife to their USA service center for inspection and adjustment, or replacement. I have a feeling that my example is not typical Civivi quality and something might have been missed at the factory.

The snappy opening action is also a result of the closed detent tension. The harder the the force to get it to release, the faster the action(coupled also with pivot tension).

Thanks. I couldn’t resist and got one. I like flashlights. I like knives. As much as this may sound like an odd combination, I’m hoping it may be useful when camping.

you’re welcome.

i bought a bunch
just for gifts.

my FedEx and UPS
drivers liked them.

I dont know if this falls in the budget knife category but it is cheaper than a few knives I have seen here, so I’ll post it up.
This is a knife kit from here. Button Lock Folding Knife Kit | Knife Handles Options Included | KnifeKits.com?
I wasn’t crazy about any of the pre-made handles they offered. I purchased a small block of Redwood burl from ebay and set in to making the handles. The handles are finished out with nothing but Tru-Oil and sanding for several coats.
.

.
Im pretty happy with the fit and finish of the kit.
The block of Redwood burl I purchased was about 1 1/2” thick. By sawing it in to thin slices, I got more than one slab out of the block.
I made good use of the rest of the wood.
.

The pics just doesn’t do it justice when looking at this figured exotic wood, its extraordinary in person.
This is a little better pic showing more detail, the wood changes appearance with the angle of view.

Hope my pics doesn’t offend anyone, just thought I would share my first kit DIY knife.

Whoa, nice!

If “offend” means “arouse”, then yeh, I’m offended.

Nice looking redwood!

People have posted pics of guns before on BLF, so I think it's allowed, and I wouldn't call your pics offensive...

So I think it's all good.

For the person earlier asking about flicking the blade out.
I have several. Fav one 3in blade Ganzo Firebird 753 m.
Hold the top bar back. Flick. open. every time.
Another. Ganzo again G733. 3 1\2 ish blade. Spiderco copy.
Holds nice edge (440c)
That one you have to tighten the blade screw a little.
They very quick opening and bouncing back a tad.

Skinning,
We made and used 1 1\2 in Powersaw blades, cut down to suit. Dipped in Rubber for handles then wrapped.

Slow grind they took and held a beautiful edge, Perfect for Buff. Goats. Croc.s and Roos.
Bit heavy for Fallow.Rusa.

Very good job, congratulations.

I guess you’ve put in the spring to make it full autowhen I see the hole for the thumb stud?
Maybe you want to fill it up, with gitd epoxy or a piece of copper or a tiny piece of that beautiful wood?

Anyhow, it’s looking really great, esp. for a starter!

the last (single) scale I made was for a Sanrenmu Land 812

It was an xmas present for my nephew, I hope he treats it well

Thanks for all the nice comments.
It does have the spring installed. Drilling the hole for the spring in a 58c harden blade with a carbide 3/64 spade bit is not fun. Took me about 45 minutes on the mill, just for that little hole. :person_facepalming:
I got a few more ideas with modding the knife, handles are done though.
Making your on handles takes a lot of TLC, your nephew is lucky guy. :+1:
