ALL THINGS BUDGET KNIVES

That Trivisa looks very nice. Cool “asphalt” Micarta. It has steel liners. Total weight is 3.84 oz (109g). Speaking of 14C28N Sandvik steel, I had spotted this CR Sebenza 21 inspired Ruike P801. Stonewashed 3.46” blade. Steel scales and frame lock, weighing in at 4.24 oz (120g). It comes in at $30 shipped on Amazon (LINK).

I bought one CRKT Squid w/Micarta scale… and just loved it enough to buy another. The action is a little stiff at first, but a little lube and flicking for a few weeks achieved a nice smoothness. This blade shape is terrific for a small EDC knife. And the grip is excellent. I’ve had a number of other sub $50 knives of my potential buy list… and the Squid has inked ’em out.

Looking like a Soba cutter to me:

That is neat knife that would certainly work well chopping vegies & things as long as they were not to thick so as to hit your hand.

I got a set of blades for my scalpel:

  • Schrade Old Timer 60A (ADDED: just took the 1st one - it’s completely dull!!!)
  • Havalon 70A
  • Havalon 60XT

I will compare them to the Chinese ones that came with the knife.

But I have a problem. Somehow one screw got lost. And it’s some unusual size, at least in here, ~3.2 mm thread diameter. Is it some imperial size? Is it some common size used in knives? Any chance to find a replacement?

Oh well, I bought a folding scalpel with the promise of it using standard #60 scalpel blades. The reality is: there is no standard or knife manufacturers don’t follow it.

Now I spent 3 times as much on replacement blades (shipped from abroad) than on the knife itself. And none fits.
They are all too thick.

Furthermore I see that my Chinese blades, Havalons and Schrades all have different opening shape. I have no idea if it makes Havalon and Schrade incompatible with each other - but it may.

I like how the blades are thicker than the Chinese ones. Especially 70A. If they locked securely in the handle, the knife would work much better. But they are all quite dull, Havalons are barely shaving and as I said before Schrade blades are very dull.

I don’t really know how to proceed now.
Should I try to widen the blade opening in my handle (how?)?
Should I try Swann Morton surgical blades?

My new fave EDC knife.

Small, elegant, sturdy.

CHEAP

Always can be razor sharp with minimal effort — no sharpening skills needed!!!

IMHO, this is nearly perfect engineering. Does everything I typically do with an EDC knife and I don’t have to care about doing anything that will dull it. Not sure why I didn’t get one of these sooner.

I goggled around, and a #6 screw is 3.3mm, so it’s likely a 6-32, maybe 6-40 if finer pitch.

Thanks, will check it out.

Pretty cool design. Looks like a great utility knife. Price is presently $10.50, which is about average discount territory for it. Wild swings during COVID supply chain issues, sending up to more than double that. Lowest around $5 some years back (likely never again), but knife was improved over time anyway. Interesting reviews. Standard razor blades means no proprietary headaches. One guy installed black blades. Some complained about the screw needing to be completely removed to change blades, hassle of a screw driver, etc. But a dime apparently fits perfectly in the screw groove.

I’ve had one for years. I really like it. The screw blade change is no big deal in exchange for a secure mounting.
It’s my choice when I think there may be blade abuse in the near future.
A good utility blade and 10 minutes on a strop, and hair popping sharp comes into view.
Otherwise the littlest Swiss Army is my constant companion.
All the Best,
Jeff

So Bestech released another budget winner and in a decent stainless this time. I almost missed it because this little guy is a Kaviso exclusive. I hadn’t heard of them before. Apparently, they’ve taken over the knife lines from Drop (formerly known as Massdrop) since Drop dropped out of the knife game. :stuck_out_tongue:

The action is good. The lock-up is solid. I’m especially glad to see them using N690 instead of D2 here. Keeping it under $50 was a bonus. If you’ve seen my criticism of brands like Kershaw and CRKT in recent years, this is the kind of quality for the money that makes me feel that way.

BTW, if it looks a little funny, that might be because the scale edges are offset for the liner lock. I was a little skeptical at first but it’s not uncomfortable in hand.

every time it is available,
it sells out really, really fast.
i do not understand that at all.
if the link is broken,
it is already g.o.n.e.

My eyes!

That’s one that’ll get through TSA no prob.

Btw, how much were they going for? For some reason, I really want one.

Looks like the Hello Kitty wanted a foldable cake knife. :person_facepalming:

There’s also a “”Warrior Buffet”:https://www.bladehq.com/item—Boker-Kalashnikov-Warrior-Buffet—142783”

I’m usually pretty good about keeping my knife blades clean after use. I got a little careless and left a thin bit of debris on my CRKT Squid D2 knife blade. It was on there for probably about 8 hours. When I cleaned off the blade, I noticed there were some stains. Yep, it’s real D2 alright. There had begun some surface level oxidation. Using a scrubbie didn’t get it off. I had to resort to using some silver polish with a paper towel. A bit of scrubbing for a minute or two—stains are now gone.

I’d seen a few other techniques when searching around. I’d avoid using steel wool as that will scratch the steel somewhat, which can ruin a polished or stone washed treatment. Naval jelly is supposed to be a good method. Also a polishing compound like simichrome.

Anyone else use some other techniques to easily remove rust stains from a D2 blade?

WD-40 works well for light rusty

I've had good results from FLITZ ...might be worth considering
