For dairy products, I follow the date. For anything else including bread, meat, canned foot etc, I keep it indefinitely. Meat and bread of course frozen and for meat : vacuum sealed. Canned foot actually lasts 20 years if stored properly.

We don’t eat deli meats for health reasons but don’t mind buying cheese with a near-term expiration date since we typically freeze them unless we plan on eating it soon. However dairy products fall into a different category from other food stock with expiration dates.

I consider these dates more of a marketing ploy than anything else. Note that I didn’t say that the dates apply equally to all products.

Note that I never even suggested that expiration dates are written in stone.
Of course, some expiration dates should be taken more seriously than others.
I just think it’s a good idea to look at the expiration date before you buy something that could go bad, and Grocery Outlet is known to try to sell products with very short expiration dates.
For example, I have seen both cheese and deli meats with an expiration date of tomorrow at Grocery Outlet. :upside_down_face:
