I have been looking for something like this. It is to replace a 20 year old clock that still works fineā¦But is too small to read when I wake in the middle of the night. I think I will hold on to the old one. Somehow I donāt think this one will last as long. I did order thoughā¦
Its a disco clock. Love it.
Iāve seen that or something like that in videos and think theyāre cool. I bought my GF a big alarm clock that is supposed to synch to the atomic clock, but itās always a few minutes fast.

BAOFENG 5RM 10W (Upgrade of UV-5R) $20.27 using code VB5KSOJT
I am debating entering the world of handheld ham radios - Iāve been eyeballing the UV-5R Mini but there seem to be some limits to the bands it can access and the UI couldnāt be updated via Chirp when it was releasedā¦
Any idea if this model fills those gaps? If Iām gonna dip my toe in a whole new hobby, Iād love to maximize my capability while minimizing my layout.
Sorry. I donāt know the answer. This is reportedly an upgraded version of the UV-5R and the listing indicates that these are the upgrades to this model>
ā 8W upgraded to 10W power; ā” 999 storage channels; ⢠1.8-inch color display; ⣠Added stopwatch, power-on password management, DTMF, BCL, TOT functions; ⤠One-key frequency copy function; ā„ Equipped with a 2500mAh large-capacity battery; ⦠Supports multiple frequency bands (UFH/VHF/GMRS/FM /AM/NOAA)
Gotcha. Iāll take a look. Like any hobby these days - itās easy to get overwhelmed with options!
Whatever you, dont buy a radio and use it foolishly. Get your ham radio technician license and learn about how radio works. Use it properly and then teach others. Dont think because its $20 it must be some toy. It can do a lot of good and it can do a lot of damage.
Iāll just be scanning frequencies, thatāll be enough fun at first. I do plan to get through the licensing process as soon as I can, itās not terribly expensive and then I can play around a lot more.
I have no doubt thereās tons of folks running around using these kinds theyāre just cheap Walmart walkies - they definitely are not.
Get the book and study for a month. Take the test. Its that easy. Its the #1 hobby if you like electronics.
Best of luck.
Thanks - Iām looking forward to it! I have a TON to learn.
8W upgraded to 10W is not much of an upgrade. IIRC, signal power falls off at the rate proportional to the inverse square of the distance, so 25% more power only gains 12% more range I believe.
