As requested, 3 XM-L Driver/Emitter module DIY

I can’t believe I just noticed this thread. What an awesome job you’ve done. The closest I’ve seen is the 4x xpg from Eltehs in Lithuania and they haven’t answered any emails. This is a big upgrade in the market. By the way, thank you for taking the time to help along non-engineer hobbyists like me.

PPtk,

I wanted to once again thank you for the advice/tips on the test points. I ordered a few to play with, and I found them even useful for testing LED’s as well:

You were right, these totally rock - thanks dude!

The heatsink’s been made. Working on the bezel now.

The screw in the middle is for the mounting. I still need to drill the holes for the wires.

Oh, yeah, PilotPTK, had you made the circuit board 34mm in diameter instead of 35mm these would be able to fit inside of a D-Mag with the optic hanging off the end of it. As it is the Mag would have to be bored out or the board modified.

Would you like to make a second PCC?

The heatsink part of it can be easily done. The bezel is not. I’ll need to buy some more 1.625” round stock before I can make more. Actually, I’ll need to buy more 1.375” round stock if I want to make more D-Mag heatsinks as the one I made for JohnnyC was almost the last of it. I have enough material to make just one more at this point.

Kick ass! Looking good PCC! Is there threading for that screw? I was just planning on running a bolt through with a nut on the back side.

It’s tapped M3 and you’re getting the screw that’s in the picture.

Peter is on the home stretch with the bezel, I can’t wait to see it finished!

I just need to decide on a UI and LED bin. I’m going to convert the mag switch to be momentary ground, with the positive bypassing the switch entirely to power the module with only the tail cap lockout to cut the power. This way I’ll be able to have 3 standard modes, then a long-press to access hidden modes. I think I might do the ramping option for mode switching as well (ramps up or down to the next mode) - it would be something unique at least.

As for the bin, should I go all out with the U2, or go with the T5 to get a little better color rendition? Hmm…I can’t decide.

Are any projects utilizing this module completed yet? Surprised this thread has died down.

There was my project but it failed because of the height difference between this module and the maglite head. I ordered a heatsink and bezel from PCC too and will be installing it in that.

I had to redo the bezel because the first one I had made was made too short by about 1/8”. Here’s the parts I’m about to ship off to JonnyC. I’ll need to make one more lens (spare) for him.

Hey PCC,

Have you made any progress on mine?

Yours is next.

You rock!

sooo, do you think you have enough thermal mass there?!! My weedy wrists ache just thinking about it

Modules produced after 8/22/2012 will be 33.6mm +/- 0.3mm (circuit board tolerance)

Told You! You’ll be just like me soon - these damn things scattered all over all of your boards!

To everyone who has PM’d me over the past week or so, please forgive me for not getting back to you. My younger sister got married Saturday, and being a destination wedding, I’ve been out of town and out of touch for about the past 10 days.

For anyone who is interested - the wedding was beautiful. My sister was a beautiful bride, and the groom is one of the finest gentlemen I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. He’s a great addition to our family.

I have a batch of modules physically produced, I just have to test and program them all. A few of you have placed pre-orders for this batch (which uses a 33.6mm circuit board instead of 35mm for better fit in a mag-host), and yours will be shipped in the next two-three days. Anyone who has PM’d me and expressed interest in ordering one, I’ll be contacting you soon. If you’re anxious, please feel free to PM me again. Anyone who wants a module and has not yet contacted me, you should hurry! I’ve only got a few in this batch that are not already spoken for.

On another note; PCC- AWESOME Enclosure. Looks Great!

Modules are in-stock and ready. PM me or email support at brightlightmodules dot com to order.

Changes to this most recent batch:

- PCB is now 33.6mm instead of 35mm. This should make it easier to fit into M@G Housings.

- More/Better Protection added for reverse battery and Inputs/Outputs

  • Full Drive increased from 3.2 Amps to 3.4 Amps

Some Photos. P60 Drop-In included for size reference

Awesome, can’t wait to get mine  Is mine the old version or the new one?

“More/Better Protection added for reverse battery and Inputs/Outputs”

Is the momentary switch still pull-down (negative) only? I would assume so, but I just wanted to check
