Autozone 1xAA side switch, normally $4, now 2 for $5, not great, not bad

haha, now i'll have to go back and buy a few more.

have you got your eye on a boost driver or just going to 14500?

it will be awhile, but someday I'll find out what that switch can handle...probably in another host.

you know, the way the head tightens, it might be easy to use QTC instead of a driver at all, and it probably won't get twisted up

can't say really, as I don't have any yet :(

edit: picked up 4 more. tried 2xAA (jumper from rear of battery to tail threads) and the light gets much brighter. it was hard to hold in place (only have a paper clip...in a hotel) so I only ran it for 45 seconds or so but it didn't dim or otherwise show damage. the body did start to get warm though, and since their is 0 heat sinking it would might toast itself w/ long term use.

dthrckt or anybody who has these. Is there a seal that goes between the lens and the bezel for waterproofing? Looking at your pic above shows what appears to be a white seal I believe. My two samples don't have that seal between lens and bezel. Guess there goes the waterproofing ... :(

all 6 of mine have just the lens and reflector inside the head.

I think what you're looking at in my photo is the washer that sits between the bottom of the 'pill' and the body. Looks like it is supposed to be a conductor between body and pill, but I tried two lights w/o it and they work fine.

there's an o-ring behind tail threads and another behind head threads, I suppose you could add one between lens and bezel - lens is 20mm OD

stock, it is at least .2m waterproof :)

this thing actually HAS a driver, sort of (i figured just a resistor inside there)

wish I had my multimeter - any experts comment on what I'm seeing here?

I got a few of these too. Mine are pretty purple but they are pretty decent for what they are. They use a simple boost circuit. You can't use the resistor method of current limiting on a torch that uses a power source less than the emitter vF.

right, i was just guessing it was some kind of very low vf

can't wait to test the driver out - i hope its ~.7a w/ a 14500 - and doesn't cook itself

From your beam photos thats a nice looking light for 2.50.

Thanks for the write-up...

I'm going to drop a different emitter in one, eventually.

I'm wondering if the driver itself can handle the higher voltage and current.

you might want to put a piece of saran wrap over the driver before you fill that thing with fujik:)

release agent, so if you toast the emitter you can keep the driver

dthrckt:

I'm amazed at all you have done so far with this truly budget light - kudos!

ok

use the saran wrap so that many years from now, after the emitter's normal life span of thousands of hours has finally expired, you can reuse the driver in a different heatsink ;)

glad to hear some others have gotten this deal, makes it worth taking the time to post pictures

I'll do at least one w/ a P4 left over from another mod, probably this weekend.

Otherwise, I think it is good as is - like you said, put one in the glovebox, desk drawer, tool box and jacket - and you've only spent $10!

I went out and got a pair based on this thread and this light is not for me. It works and its bright inside my truck but even eight feet away it doesn't light up enough of anything for me to see! I've been useing these eyes for 64 years and they need a few extra lumens to work well now.

I'm going to take them back to Autozone.

driving to autozone costs me as much in gas as 1 or 2 lights :)

but yes, at 1/3 the cost, it is probably 1/3 the output of a $7.50 AA light w/ any cree emitter

Go to home depot and buy the etech 2 pack for 10$

2 xpe's one mode hole in the pill 1 amp 3 AAA light that claims it does 84 lumens but in reality does about 150lumens .. pretty nice 5$ light with a plastic lens and a pretty sharp attack bezel .throws like an xpe ..while supplies last

I found it after visiting the 2nd Home Depot near work at lunch time. 2/$8.88.

I think my wife might be right - this is turning into an addiction..

Not a bad light, but I'd rate the lumens at less than 100.

I just stopped there yesterday to buy some wipers. I picked up one and tried it out. It is nothing special. Tint had a lot of blue and not very powerful.
It is nothing special but for $2.50 it is not bad for placing lights around the house or cars just in case. Just don’t expect too much and it won’t disappoint.

totally agree. it is worth $2.50, since it comes with a battery. $1 would be a deal. $4 is too much...

I modded one, mostly because I wanted to stop thinking about how to do it lol

I would say the only reason to do it is if you want a very light weight flashlight that eats 14500s...
