Can a capacitor smooth out PWM based dimming?

Can a capacitor be used to smooth PWM?

I’m wondering if running a capacitor between the wires to the LED would decrease the intensity of PWM. I imagine it would also cause a slight lag in the light out put when changing modes, on and off, etc. Wouldn’t the decreased shock in current changes generally extend LED life? Has anyone tried this or have any educated guesses on driver/performance impact? If anyone know what would probably be the best type of capacitor to use and/or size for a 3.5amp light, that would be great to hear.

a simular thread is already made, maybe take a look there. if i understand correctly it would work but the size of those capacitors would be to big to fit a flashlight.
