Can i replace sub c cells with NiMH in my 18V nicad drill?

it should not be a problem for charging, i don’t think there is much difference in algorithms except the NiMH has a lower termination signal, but i don’t know if the NiMH can put out the peak current

i wouldn’t use eneloop, i would get a cheaper 2500mAh battery, it would not matter if its lsd or not

perhaps you should try the 12V supply idea being floated above, i’ll bet you have one

I think we can safely rule out the damage concern, but not much we can do about the rest. Plus you don’t have a high current 12v PSU anway, so it’s moot. :frowning:

i was going to point out on my next reply that since i don’t have one it has become an academic discussion anyways :stuck_out_tongue:

I wouldn’t use ANY type of AA battery in a power tool battery pack. If you want to use NiMH batteries, get sub-C NiMH batteries specifically intended for high drain.

I wouldn’t use any NiMH or NiCad in a power tool battery pack (AA, SubC, etc). If someone happened to use a AA to rebuild a powertool pack I would certainly recommend that they use an Eneloop or other LSD cell. LSD chemistries are the highest drain AA chemistries.

AFAIK StorminMatt’s point may be that NO AA chemistry is even close to being high drain as the cells used to build those packs. This is correct, healthy SubC’s should give 10C or more while Eneloops may give 5C.

i will keep this in mind, since NIMH sub C are available i will consider those if i decide to replace these batteries

No, they aren’t. The highest drain AA batteries are Elite 2000s, NOT Eneloops. And they’re NOT LSD. In fact, high drain NiMH cells are never LSD.

BTW, if you HAD to run AA batteries in a power tool pack, Elites would be what you want.

where do you buy them?

This might be a bit of your course but sandwich shoppe sells adapter plates for makita 18v lithium packs. I used one of them to convert a tool to my packs. Both laptop pulls and old makita packs are available as well as chargers. Probably more work than you’re interested in but might be a good way to get a decent capacity pack with a madeforit charger for not to much cash. Btw, in my experience, lithium cells store just fine for months without use. I have some makita pulls that tested over 4.1V 6 months after charging. I don’t normally do that but was testing them for sd. If you want, I have some empty makita 18v lithium cases I can send you.

Good point. Blast from the past. Of course you are correct that LSD is never the highest drain NiMH chemistry, that’s why I specified AA chemistry - I’d simply forgotten about the Elite 2000’s.
