yes, the document has a password on it.I opened the folder in zarchiver, if that makes a difference.

You can see the filename of the encrypted document inside the .rar fire, but you can not extract it out of there without password. Maybe that combined with some explorer-like UI got you confused. So you saw the file inside the .rar, and when you tried to click it, it started asking password.
