My “guess” (almost 100% certain) is that the groove on the Desert Tan version is present in all those lights, independently of being ordered on Convoy Store, GB, BG, FT, MTN, … That is one of the “model” characteristics (along with the black metal button, DTP plate, XPL-HI Led, AR coated Lens, and a slightly “taller” tail)!
Biscotti or non-biscotti firmware depends on the place where you order it
That’s pretty much spot on. The only exception would be if it were older stock. When they did the first round they forgot the clip groove at the head. That was remedied in the following production and should be standard from here on out in pretty much all of the S series. Even the brand new S9 has the dual groove. :sunglasses:
Yeah…I made the S2+ groovier.
Thanks for stepping in and explaining the process J-Dub It’s much better having the source breathing out the info for us
Also, thanks for making it groovier, it is a nice feature in a more than nice light :sunglasses:
Also, I guess that by this time, the “old” batch is probably over since some time ago with the purchases done so far
The clip groove in the head is definitely a useful feature and as it’s just a wider cut than the one already on the older models, it’d be great if it became standard for all S2+ models. Specially handy with the short tube and a cap
Since I commented earlier that I was a bit surprised at the size difference between the Convoy S2+ and Solarforce L2 series (shown here with the L2N in gray), I though I’d post a comparison photo. It also shows all the pocket clip grooves on the Desert Tan S2+.
Hey J-Dub, do you know if Simon would be open to doing gift sets or starter bundles? I don’t know how hard it would be for him to source good batteries (I’m thinking Sanyo NCR18650GAs or Samsung 35Es) but I would think he could get Liitokala chargers.
A starter set with the Desert Tan S2, 18650 battery, and Lii100 charger would be awesome. Could do the same for the Clear C8. Heck, you could even do the S2, C8, 2 batteries, and Lii202. Even better if it could all be packaged in a single gift box. Having everything you need would make it an incredibly easy gift, and it would also be great for recommending to new people. When somebody comes to BLF or the flashlight subreddit, we could just link them to the set and say here is everything you need. Right now, we have to say get this light, then go over here for a charger, and then figure out an appropriate source for batteries. Being able to say “Buy this, and you are done” would make it easier to recommend to others, and would also make it a go-to gift for anyone who doesn’t have a decent light.
It’s a good idea, but shipping to most countries wouldn’t be possible if it contains lithium-ion batteries. He’d have to find a carrier that would ship it, and they change their policy on lithium-ion cells all the time.
I understand there might be some country limitations, although there seems to be more flexibility if you ship the batteries inside the lights.
Sofirn manages to offer kits that include a battery and charger. Unfortunately, they use rewrapped cells, so I’m not sure how good they are, and the chargers they use are… questionable, to say the least. Several other brands also routinely ship batteries inside their lights.
I’d rather see a Lii 100 or Lii 202 and genuine Sanyo GAs or Samsung 35Es. Items that we already know are reliable, making it easier for us to recommend them to new people.
I see Simon already has the Lii 100 listed in the Convoy store, but it is over $8 a piece, which is rather expensive. If the total for an S2+, charger, and battery could be kept to the $30 range, that would be really appealing.
I’ve wanted to do this for a long time for the very same reasons. Unfortunately it is as WalkIntoTheLight said. Shipping of Lithium ion cells to different countries is nearly impossible to do without a ridiculous amount of time and effort. He doesn’t even have batteries listed in his store anymore. It’s just too much hassle and a huge time drain for him as a smaller operation. Much better that he focuses on his passion. Flashlights.
Ok, I kind of figured as much. But do you know how Sofirn manages to offer things like this? Their site automatically tells you if the items can be shipped to your location. Unfortunately, I don’t know if I trust their batteries, and I definitely don’t trust that charger. I was hoping Convoy would be able to offer something similar, but using more reputable accessories. Sofirn seems to be offering some competition in Convoy’s price range, but I still prefer Convoy’s reputation for reliability.
Maybe if it was limited to only shipping batteries inside the lights (which seems to make shipping easier) it would be more practical? Like I said, I understand if it’s not possible. It was just a thought to make it easier for us to increase his business through gifts/recommendations.
I bought a couple of BLF A6 lights from banggood last summer, that included a Samsung 30Q cell shipped installed in the light. Pretty good deal, and they shipped to Canada. By the shipping rules, it is easier to ship batteries that way. However, it still requires paperwork, and shippers that permit it. Banggood cut out shipping installed batteries, the same time they also cut out shipping of batteries alone.
It seems that shippers will allow all shipments of batteries, or they don’t allow shipping of batteries regardless of whether they’re installed or not. So, while shipping batteries installed in a light should be easier, it doesn’t appear to be that way in practice.
While I think the idea of a gift package is a great idea, it might be too much hassle to handle different SKU’s if they can’t all be shipped worldwide.
Don’t know if this has been addressed before, but last week I received a S2+ Desert Tan from GearBest (to use as host for a triple), and only tonight, when using the 18350 tube I noticed a thing: a difference in anodization.
The one bought to Simon (along with the 18350 tube) has a “darker” brown, more “matte”, while the one received from GearBest seems to have some “golden” and more “shinny” look. (on the pics it even seems a mix of green/grey/brown/golden :person_facepalming: )
It is not a big thing, but a difference can be noticed between the parts of the different stores (at least in my hosts).
The one from GB is on the left . On the “shorty” version, note the “shine” difference between the tail and the tube!
I don’t know if this a “single” case, or if the other Convoy S2+ Desert Tan flashlights from GB are that different. Also, I don’t know about those bought in other stores as Fasttech, Banggood, MTN, or others.
So far, I’ve been trying out a few flashlights, and when there’s the choice of battery included, I typically choose the one which includes battery, because ordering batteries has simply become too expensive (typically the shipping cost of bare battery is nearly equal to the cost of the battery, if I were to order battery itself from sellers than do ship bare batteries to my country). So having the battery inside the flashlight as an option (for those who can get batteries with little shipping cost, then it probably makes sense to order batteries separately, but not in my case) would be great.
So far, I’ve noticed that (at least shipping to my country), Singapore Post appears to allow flashlights/headlights with battery inside it — I’ve had several such kind of orders and they arrive in the regular amount of time. (Singapore Post doesn’t allow bare batteries shipping to my country). Unlike shipping of bare batteries (eg. using Belgian Post), which take about 6-10 weeks to arrive. (Singapore Post usually 4-6 weeks to my country).

MascaratumB,
Thanks for pointing out the differences, my S2+ Desert Sand is also direct from Simon/Convoy, and it looks similar to the one on the right (darker matte).
BTW, what’s on the tailcap (light green ring) of your right-side S2+?
Hum, I got one of those “blueish” from Simon in 18350 version, and I also thought it would be grey. However, I prefer the blueish look on it
I prefer the colour from the one of Simon as well! The other seems to have a “anodization colour shift” :confounded:
The thing used on the right side light is Glow-In-The-Dark tape, that I cut and put on that tail groove!
Almost all my lights have those on the host to make it easier to locate them in the darkness. They sometimes last for 8-9hours illuminated
Can you expound more on the “blueish” S2+, you mean blueish tint or blueish body tube color? Any screenshot to compare the 2 versions (blueish vs non-bluish) — these are the XM-L2 versions instead of XP-L Hi, right?
