Hello Simon! Any chance we can get a buck driver for the S21E ? Something like a 5-6A?
Thank you.
Is the SFT-90 going to be offered in the M21J? Seems like it should be a good drop-in alternative for even better value and also fit the TIR lens better than the SBT90. The 20.5A driver should be suitable no?
I don’t think the SFT90 is in any Convoy lights yet.
I’m very interested in the SFT90, though I think I’ll wait until a Convoy light has one with a 5000K (or warmer tint) and 70 CRI.
I might have to wait a while for that because I don’t think the SFT90 is available in that tint yet.
Pretty sure Simon will mount it if one asks nicely. He has drivers, LEDs and gaskets already
Okay, I’ll wait for a better tint to show up and then ask in this thread.
I’m thinking of building an L21B with the new SFT-90 and the “12A” FET driver, what’s the best cell for this? Will a very high current cell like the EVE 40PL or Ampace JP40 be too much for this?
I have that combo with a JP40, works fine.
@Simon_Mao:
If you do put the SFT90 in any flashlights, I would prefer if you pair the emitter with a smooth reflector (for extra throw).
I’d like to see this in an S16, criminally underrated host.
Is there a centering ring for it in that reflector? What size opening is it?
edit: found it on the convoy website, it’s only offered with a 7mm opening it seems but the M21B which is very similar has an OP reflector with a 10mm opening with 7070 gasket option
ew ew ew !!EW!! omg OP > SMO
S16 reflector has a 7mm opening. Convoy does not offer a 7070 centering ring for 7mm opening.
A different strategy is often required to use large format LEDs in small reflectors. In push style lights like the S2+ for example, the centering gasket needs to be a structural component of sorts, contacting the body of the reflector rather than the base. S16 has a front bezel, so depending on how the window and reflector are constrained, something like a fat O-ring might be sufficient to push the reflector forward against the glass. (I don’t have an S16.)
M21B loses the main benefits of the S16 though, having a straight-walled design and the stainless steel bezel. The 7mm hole should be enough for the SFT-90 since its die emitting area is 3.10x3.12mm
SFT-90 is a thrower. Putting it in an OP is kinda a waste or the emitter. Might as well go for a more efficient, less throwy emitter at that point, and get better tint (and, optionally, CRI).
By the way, many people say “SFT40” or “SFT70”, but I’ve noticed a lot of people saying “SFT-90” lately.
It doesn’t matter much, but I say “SFT90” to be consistent.
The official name has a -
for all luminus, so that’s what I use
Fair enough.
Yeah, better stick to official names.
SFT90 in a S2+ anyone?
My 50.3 HI S2+ can already give me hand blisters in 20 seconds though…
A funny thing is, actually for round LES and multi-dies they would have the suffixes R and X, but most manufacturers and people would just ignore it. Until someone who didn’t understand the routine used the name SFT-25R for the first post online, and then all manufacturers took the R suffix.
