Costco Eneloops

It looks like that. They’re still in the $20’s in my store, linkable and all.

Around this time of year as around me you won’t find many rechargeable batteries besides the low mah rayovac ones. My guess is people are buying them to give with Christmas presents. I normally buy the Duracell ones they are $10 here. I’ve had to wait a month for a restock before. Seems like people really buy up the aa Duracell’s in this area. They always have the AAA. The only battery I’ve had a issue with is imedion. One vented in my nitecore ea41 on low mode. Bubbled the switch boot up. It went back in place but I was pissed. Maybe had 30 cycles on it. Will never purchase them again. A name people haven’t really heard of is odec they are cheap on amazon. Its $25ish for 16 batteries I believe. And they are good. I have 12 I rotate almost daily in a lantern we use a lamp and probably have 200+ cycles on and still going strong. Maybe lost a couple hundred mah. They are a tight fit in some things but fit in all my lights and such.

This is what I’ve experienced .
I also buy by price so I get to play with lots of batteries . My early energizers were 25 cents a pop so I had to buy them .But I’m also happy that I re-sold most of them because they went DOA4 times quicker than eneloops/duraloops .
I just grabbed some new Fujitsu AAA’s
and nabbed 8 amazon basic AA’s for 50 cents a pop …Sadly I’ve never had a battery that actually said eneloop on it … I need some chinese labels for my japanese cells .

There’s an Ebay seller(s) out of Sandy, Utah—ShopGL and they’re the US Distributor for Fujitsu and presumably Eneloops, since they market the latest of those, in case quantities. I’ve followed them for at least a couple of years and bought my Fujitsu AAs from them, along with the Fujitsu USB power bank/charger.

In his/her ads, they’re very forthcoming with the information about the history and the latest ‘batches’ in America. They also give us the rundown on ‘generations.’ The last Fujitsu batch to be imported to the US was June 2016 production, IIRC. I thought I read four weeks ago, when the Gen. 5s (70% after 10 years: the biggest clue) first started being mentioned, that they were mid summer production. Go by the packaging and the dates.

So, the difference is 70% for 10 years on the package, rather than 70% for 5 years? But, the cells look the same? I’m surprised they didn’t change the wrapper.

The Costco Eneloops AAA’s are a 12 pack for the same $20 price as the 10 pack of AA’s.

Late summer 2016 date codes and the 70% after 10 years is how I think we distinguish Gen. 5s from Gen. 4s, which are both 2100 cycles.

Frankly, I’m worrying more about the Zika virus than I’m worrying about my Eneloops.

I still have a 5th Anniversary sealed 8 pack of their Glitters, dated 9/2012! The first pack I opened all tested out pretty good.

Here’s my write up on them:

IIRC, the 70% after 10 years statement has been around for about a year. But I have 4th generation that uses the 70% after 5 years on the box. So, was gen 4 marketed with both 70% after 5 years AND 70% after 10 years? If so, the marketing remains the same for “5th” gen, which makes me wonder if there really is a 5th gen. For all the other generations, they raised the number of cycles.

I don’t think it’s been around that long.

ShopGL (and other handles on Ebay) out of Sandy/SLC, Utah is the US Distributor for the FDK Fujitsu cells and is very knowledgeable on the timelines.

What I think is happening, much like with Lifestraw and Mountain House products, is that these ‘newish’ products are starting to test out over a longer period of time and hence, the shelf life gets extended.

Anyhow, one way or the other, they’re labeling things at 70% capacity after 10 years. That’s a big jump from where I started with my Gen. 2, 1500 cycles Eneloops back in early 2012.

They were like 85% after a year and 70% after 3 years, IIRC.

Chris

My gen 1 Eneloops (bought in 2006) are labelled 85% for 6 months, 75% for 1 year. I don’t think I ever measured it to see what it really was, but I think that was close.

BTW, they’re still in somewhat regular use, and still performing great. I use them in 2amp discharge applications, and they still have about 90% of the capacity compared to gen 4 (or 5?). Not bad for cells that are over 10 years old.

Yesterday - May 22 2017 I bought the ten pack of AA Eneloops for $16.99 at the Waterbury Costco, the original price is $19.99.
An instant coupon for $3.00 brings the price down to $16.99
I have been watching for a price drop since December 2016.
The AAA’s twelve pack is also $16.99 with the instant coupon.

Thanks, I’ve also been waiting for a sale at Costco. I’ll be picking up the AAAs.

Mine has been out of AA’s for weeks or longer, and I can’t see this sale bringing them back in stock.

I picked up a 12 pack of AAAs today at Costco for $16.99. They didn’t have any AAs, but luckily I only needed AAAs.

You lucky guys!

I’m going there on Wednesday. Hopefully, they’re still on sale.

The coupon is good until June 18, 2017

Thanks Paul

Here’s the latest eneloop offering from Costco:

I saw that the last time I was there. I was disappointed to be honest. I like the batteries only packs they used to sell.
