That is true for the S2+, I can confirm that. But the S3 is accessed via the head and not the battery compartment.

When I built my S3, I thought I had the same problem. I was able to make it work by using a long screwdriver inside the host body to hold the pill still. I had the pill positioned so that I had to firmly grip the lens bezel in order to fully tighten it. Doing it this way allowed for the GITD o-ring to compress slightly, holding the lens securely. I get no rattle from the lens, reflector, or anything else on my S3.

So you don’t screw the pill all the way to the bottom and instead use the pressure from the reflector/lens/GITD o-ring to hold it still?

In effect that’s what is happening. The S3 works a little different than the S2, S2+, etc. Since the S3 doesn’t have a removable head, one needs to use a long screwdriver or some long needle nose pliers to reach the pill for tightening. Since the S3 has a removable chrome bezel that allows access from the lens side of things, I found it simpler to get the pill where I want it, then tighten the chrome bezel to exert the necessary pressure. I am able to hold the pill in place with a long screwdriver inside the tube. I use a jar grip to make it easy to tighten the bezel down. It was much easier for me this way than when I tried to tighten it down fully with the long screwdriver.

I do that with my C8 flashlights as well, when I use a dedomed led. The dedomed led focusses better with the plastic ring around the emitter removed, which makes the head assembly just a bit shorter. By not entirely screwing in the pill, and tighten the bezel/reflector on top of it, everything is nice and tight.
