Enjoying your flashlights - despite mosquitoes!

i just use a cheap little 20” square box fan and set it up close to where i will be sitting or working outside. i like his big fan and use one to ventilate my attic, my bug problem is not as bad as his.

Haven’t used that stuff before that I can remember. However some Coleman non Deet spray had that in it I think and it didn’t work either. This was the worst I’ve seen and no campfire because it was so hot out for the smoke. Kind of a bummer to drive almost 4 hours only to leave the next day. Next time we will go later in the summer when they’re died down and avoid that particular campground since it’s well-known for the mosquitos.

So this just works by filtering the air, without any sort of attractant?

Looks that way from the video. Probably less so w/o such a powerful fan?

Test Result: both of my racquets are a big FAIL

Didn’t kill any mosquitoes; their body weight is so low and size such that they just don’t get past the outer grid to touch the middle one, and the other one just never fired a spark or caught a bug. i used fresh AA cells and i was able to test them to cause zapping. So these were worthless for me, ymmv.

None needed, but he does show using a bottle of selzter water in one video to emit CO2.

My little box fan catches about 50 in an hour. i have noticed that those big stripe-leg variety are strong enough to sometimes escape, but most can’t fly off the screen once caught. The rubbing alcohol spray kills them so they can’t leave when you turn off the fan.

thanks, i almost ordered one. works on regular flies though, right? lots of farms around here…somehow, a couple a day get in my house, i think through AC units, or letting dogs in and out.

I’ve been using the electric USB chargeable Thermacell Radius and it actually works pretty well if there’s no wind.

The internal battery should last about 6 hours, and it uses liquid cartridges that lasts 40 hours, but it comes with a 12h one in the box.
With an added power bank it could last all evening + night.

The only downsides with this electric one is that the button easily turns on in your backpack, so I’ve taped a stiff cardboard over the button, and the cartrdige tends to leak if placed on its side for longer periods. So I’ve put my cartridge in a small zip-lock bag with a paper towel around it and make sure to keep my backpack upright when I can.

Yeah, they came up with that stoopit design to keep people from electromocuting themselves by grabbing both sides of the racquet. So it’s like 3 layers of chicken-wire (–/+/–) that the beastie has to short out to get zapped.

My old one (fiik where it went) was just 2 layers of hardware-cloth, offset to each other. Anything from a big fat horsefly to little gnats could get trapped and zapped.

Think one of the cats stepped on the one I have now, or something fell on it, because all 3 layers of chicken-wire are smooshed together and bowed out on one side, so I gotta try prying ’em away from each other without making the distance too far.

Ugh.

Lightbringer, you’ve got me thinking about making a dangerous one.

Nismo, sounds like the radius is electric OR butane? Haven’t seen that one, I’ll definitely check it out. With no wind, the thermacell effect is impressive, you can see the mosquitoes staying away from you. It paralyzes them if they get too much. I guess they sense it because I’ve not seen one drop…
