Fenix TK61 MT-G2 FET driver - edit 09.03.15: XHP 50 upgrade!

I love builds with MT-G2, just because you can’t loose, lumens, great tint and enough throw for me.

My first thought, when I purchased TK-61 was, after fixing the off center led, was to use the super driver Richard (RMM) is producing and it is the very same Vihn is usind to his TK-61 V2,3. This would give me the top thrower out there, even If I had decede not to dedome it.
Today, a crazy idea came to my mind. After speaking with Richards, he told me that the mt-g2 would work with super driver, but since tk61 is 2s2p, a fet based nanjg, zener modded, loaded with srk firmware, would be more efficient solution:

The reflector fits perfect to mt-g2. Beamshots soon…

nice crazy build!

Very sweet. What FW do you have loaded on that driver? I imagine it is specified on RMM's site unless there are options.

Here are some MT-G2 throw numbers that have been gathered from BLF members.

I love crazy people who do crazy things. I agree with you about the MTG-2. It grows on you so that you become addicted to it. Looking forward to the beam shots.

What sort of clamp / jig / work holder do you got there?

nice work! just an FYI- richard’s driver will run an MT-G2 as well!

Dave from EEVblog would say “electronic porn”
P.S. first pic, firs light form left hand side, what is that (3 x MTG)?

Thanks, TR-J19 3xMT-G2

Thanks, jewellery vise

Thanks, SRK Star firmware, no ramping

Thanks!

Nice. Really like that FW. Finally, someone around here will have a MT-G2 light with a proper diameter reflector (not counting spotlights). I would be tempted to dedome for throw, but the most useful beam pattern would probably be with the dome. Seems like this is going to be a fantastic light. I'm so jealous.

Looking forward to beam shots!

NICE!!!

Please post pics comparing to other known throwers, TN31, Olight, K40 etc…

I have been thinking about putting an MT-G2 in my TK61 as well (but with higher regulated output compared to the FET driver (HX1175B?) and very similar body and battery carrier modifications as the TK75 R86 edition). Still not sure what Ill end up with.. Hopefully this thread will guide me in the right direction. :D

Please do a beamshot comparison with the K40M. If you got numbers on both lights for comparison sake that would be great too.

Great build. Thank you for sharing it :-)

(And get beamshots :-) )

Looks good. I would be afraid of the dome coming off when it gets hot with it sitting against the reflector like that. I have learned that the hard way.

When the led gets hot, the plastic reflector melts :~
Imagine what would happened if I used the super driver of yours, total meltdown.

No. The reflector will not melt. The MT-G2 dome will come off, taking some die material with it.

I can attest to what RMM says, I’ve had that happen on a couple MT’s now, that’s pretty much the “hot dedome method” we all use when we want to dedome an emitter on purpose, it’ll definitely happen if you run the light till its hot then jar it.

You don't want any pressure on the die dome, including the flat portion on at the bottom. The MT-G2 does not give you a clean dedome that way and it always takes some phosphor with it.

My test MT-G2 is one that I accidentally dedomed like that.

Lol as is mine, tho I’ve been a little to hard on it and now don’t run it <5A (it’s got a huge burned spot on the die).

What I did (in a Shadow tc300 mod) is cutting the thin layer of silicon around the dome away and replace it with a cardboard ring (I needed the cardboard to electrically insulate the led from the reflector). That way no pressure is leftover on the silicone. It runs at 8A (for short runs, it gets bloody hot fast) without damage.
