The 3 holes in the center of the PCB are for standoffs on the TIR so it cannot move once put in place.

Yes the center contact for the LEDs is connected to the whole of the rest of the pcb which is aluminum.

I forgot to post this before Christmas happened but I almost got it all finished!

Started off with replacing the wires on the driver. I need to pick up some wire (all I have is 22awg) but for this I used some from a laptop power supply so I know it can handle the current.


Had to test it with the new wires just to make sure it works

Getting the wires through the head and the retaining ring took way to long (1.5 hours)

Final Assembly! Making sure to use a good amount of thermal paste to make sure there’s contact.

There was a little extra room between the spacer and the pcb so I had to use some trimmed down copper shims to fill the gap. I thing the pressure from the bezel and the little thermal paste I put in should give good thermal contact throughout.

It’s all together… and it doesn’t work. It powers on but then blinks and shuts off so that’s not ideal. I made sure that there wasn’t a short anywhere so it must be the driver. I might have messed it up anytime in the process but luckily I have another 3v8a driver in my S6 that I can take and hopefully that will fix the problem. I sadly wasn’t able to get that swapped in before christmas so I should be able to do that tomorrow and hopefully that will fix the issue. I’m very excited to have this finished!

Could it be the battery?

No I checked with multiple batteries and made sure they were all charged. Luckily I’m fairly certain that it’s not a short so a driver swap should fix the issue

It is finished!!! I swapped in the other 3v8a driver I had (rip my S6) and it works flawlessly. I’m very happy that I didn’t have to remove the wires in the head because that would have been an absolute nightmare
Sadly I forgot to take photos during the driver replacement but here it is finished!



I even trimmed a piece of glow tape to fit around the LEDs

Sadly I live in a city so there isn’t anywhere great for me to take beamshots but here is my attempt.


It is definitely brighter than I was expecting based on my calculations. It lights up my small backyard very well and is great for taking my dog out.
I love the 519As that are in this light and they even turned out a little warmer than I expected (I ordered 4500K) and just slightly rosy (duv = -0.0009)

I have no way of measuring lumens but I was able to calculate that this light has around 170m of throw (~7000cd) which is great! In the future I might dedome the 519As to get a little more throw. I would love to get a runtime test for this light but I have no good way to do that currently.

I’m so happy I could have an entry in this competition this year and that I could finish on time (barely). Thanks to the organizers and all the great sponsors!

I don’t expect this to impact the judging but so far this light has been everything I’ve hoped for! It has survived its first fall when I dropped it on my porch and my dog is very well illuminated when he goes to the bathroom at night
