Flashlights for Emergency Prep

S2+ is the Convoy-brand flashlight of choice for the whole forum. It’s the little tube light that could.

Here it is:

Hmm, speaking of which, anyone know where to get an 18500 for cheap (ie, not 5bux for the cell, 15bux for shipping)?

I can’t find my shorty S2+ nor recall if I let someone <coff!> “borrow” it or what. Wanna make another one if need be, and would prefer to not have a Slinky™ inside the battery tube.

Maybe this?

But the Vapcells 18500 (green) seem better

Tangential to the thread —- an elderly neighbor just asked me to find one of those little solar-rechargeable power banks for her cell phone (we live in earthquake country, a few blocks from the locked’n’loaded local fault).

I reminded her the cell tower batteries are only good for 24 hours, but still, that first day could be critical.

Does anyone have a known good source for the little solar battery bank things?

Checking reviews makes me very suspicious that most of what’s offered out there is junk.
In amongst the 5-star reviews is the occasional “too light for claimed battery capacity” and “solar panel won’t recharge” ….

Can’t she just recharge her phone in the car in case of emergency?

She could but it would be a huge waste of fuel unless she had to go somewhere.

I’d like to get a decent solar charger my self. I have one of Olight’s little blue USB chargers and it works pretty well. I think the Olight and a solar charger would make a nice combination.

You guys are doing great with all the suggestions and ideas. Keep it coming.

There’s no reason to start the engine, the car’s battery can easily recharge a cell phone without compromising engine cranking abilities.

I have done a little research on the Convoy S2+. I can see why you recommend that light. Very impressive.

True, but how many people know this? I can picture most people starting the engine and sitting in their car.

It’s even better if you send Simon a message on Ali asking for Biscotti, a firmware far better than the stock 3/5 with blink on Low and no LVP.

Well there’s no reason to sit in the car either.

Agreed. But I can still see people doing it.

I see where you’re going with this, you believe she wants to be able to buy a feeling of comfort… that she has taken control of the risk.
You have a point.

Ooh, yeah, I could see if Mr Vapcell has an authentic AX store or whatever. I don’t want to chance getting some Crapfíre cell.

After key-out, mine cuts off power to all the sockets after 10min or so, to keep from wearing down the battery.

There should be an accessory position. If not, you can leave the engine off and key on, and shut off the lights, radio, and A/C.

OK, Does Simon have a business name? If I go to AliExpress and type in “Simon” I’ll get all sort of stuff I don’t want or need.

There are a number of portable solar panels in the $15-$20 range that would be capable of charging a phone and power bank at the same time. There are also cheap powerbanks with an integrated solar panel on top, but those panels are generally too small to be able to keep up over the long term, especially if the power bank is significantly depleted overnight.
