It does appear just like a micro USB cable but if you look at the large end of the cable there is a doodad that contains firmware and driver for the cable. The dongle is necessary for programming. I went through the same thing when I bought the Baofeng UV5R walkie. I bought mine in Amazon with programming software cd for around $6 bucks. Hope this helps you guys considering the walkie.
