Hank's D3AA: *finally* the first in-depth review!

agree

I prefer the Nichia LED options for the D3AA, but my TS10 is modded…

1 Thank

Yup… all very true (except for side switches… personal preference). Though in the now couple of years with a TS10 in my pocket daily, I have yet to have an accidental activation…

But none of that makes it easier to carry and use…for me. Sure, different strokes…

1 Thank

I greatly prefer my TS10 modded to sw45k

I dont need to lockout my TS10, that is one of the things I like about it. I dont lock my D3AA either…

I dont use the Voltage color Aux, I like Aux on Low Red. I prefer an Amber button on my D3AA, and I like that it stays on when the main LEDs are on, unlike the RGB button, which turns off during lights on.

I love the smooth handfeel of my TS10, and the symmetry and balance of its waistline. It feels very comfortable and secure in cigar grip.

I dont use clips on either light.

Definitely agree that D3AA has far better LEDs than TS10.

D3AA has longer runtime, and NoPWM. And it is dual fuel.

otoh, I prefer the TS10 for its lower weight.

I dont use Turbo, my use pattern does not get either light hot.

I prefer tailswitches and smooth curves

Just throwing this out there since nobody else ever mentions it- Love my D3’s and will never again carry a TS10 despite having 7-8. But the issue I always had with them is pulling it out of my pocket and it was a coin toss on either pushing the switch to turn it on or pushing the plastic over emitter and realizing it was the wrong end. I can pull out any other torch with my eyes closed and turn it on by feel in a split second. Even my EDC M150 with the terrible design of charging surface opposite the switch which feels similar is no issue as I keep the clip on the backside of the switch.

1 Thank

With the m150 in the dark I find it v easy to pinch both the button and the charging surface, so you always get one of them

I think Zeroair beat ya, but thanknyou for the review!

New guy question. That DD 4500k looks warmer than I’d expect for 4500k. Is it 4500k with a dome or dedomed? As in, originally 4500 with the dome and now the actual temperature is lower after DD’ing.

4500K DD means it was 4500K originally.
Dedoming lowers CCT by about 22%, so 4500K becomes 3500K.

3 Thanks

yes
the actual Color Temperature of the DeDomed 4500K is now 3400K. That is a 25% reduction in CCT.

Here are 3 CCT of 519a, 3000K, 4500K and 5700K, with dome on, and dedomed:

the 4500K with duv -0.0003 (3rd from left), became 3400K with duv -0.0036 (4th from left)

here is another actual before and after DeDoming:

notice that not only does the Color Temperature go down by 20% in this example, the Tint duv moves lower by 0.0061 duv points (from 0.0038 above the black line, to -0.0023 below the line)

DeDoming has a large and visible effect. Here is a before and after of the beam color, cct, and duv of another 519a 4500K:

on this example, the cct dropped by 22%, and duv dropped by 0.0048 points

3 Thanks

Thanks, very helpful info
