There are three different types of lithium battery fires, electrical, chemical, and hypergolic. If you have seen a live lithium fire or photograph of a lithium fire you have seen the electrical variety. It’s caused by short circuiting of the battery. Excessive current melts the metals within the battery causing sparks. Adding water causes steam, sputtering, and mild explosions. Most first extinguishers work by excluding oxygen. Since oxygen is not involved in the reaction, electrical fire extinguishers do nothing.
Chemical and hypergolic (look up the word) are different types of the chemical category. In a chemical fire, lithium will strip the oxygen from water liberating hydrogen, a very combustible fuel. Pouring water on such a fire will accelerate the fire. Hypergolic is a special case where no ignition source is needed to start the lithium fire. Hypergolic states are seen in low states of battery charge!
