Help me choose my first Lithium powered flashlight :)

Hi all,

i want to buy a Lithium powered flashlight but I’m unsure which one. The requirements are:

1. Single cell 18650

2. Support for flat head cells (as I got a bunch from old laptop battery packs)

3. XM-L

4. Not more than 20-25$

5. Shotgun mountable (Optional)

I spent some time on DX and these are what I came up on a shortlist (mostly based on the looks as I haven’t seen any of them ever up-close).

I am open to suggestions and thanks for the help.

Have a look at Solarforce sales and find the L2M host. You’ll need a p60 drop in to go with it. But it’s a very nice light. Manafont sell an ok 3 mode XM-L T6 drop in for not much. Personally I’d ditch the laptop batteries and buy some quality ones. Crap cells ruin good lights and highly driven lights need a good stable voltage or they’ll dim quickly.

Save yourself a lot of time and trouble, just buy this:

No Problem, that is a good choice, very good choice…

I EDC your basic 501B, with a NW XM-L and a 2.8A Nanjg-105C with the 3rd star soldered for L/M/H. The one thing that gets it into my pocket is the momentary-ON switch. I opted for the camo, but it’s frail and I don’t recommend it.

I occasionally need significant area illumination at work. This one does that. On High it pours out lovely buckets of light, M and L are available if the need for “less light” (whatever THAT is!) ever arises. I don’t even care about throw, but this light will throw light farther than I can throw this light. For me, that works out to “the yard and enough of the woods”…

For EDC, I wish it were significantly smaller. SWMBO kindly sewed a stitch in the RH front pockets of my work pants so it will “tailstand” in there & not bash my hand as I walk (a lot) each day. That’s all good and I don’t care, as “it gives a lovely Light”!!

BTW, I also ONLY use scrounged laptop batteries. Obviously not everyone has enjoyed the success I have. Every single 18650 I have scrounged has either NOT worked from the first try, or it is still working either for me or for one of my friends who also like “buckets of light”. Usually (YMMV) the laptop packs fail in the control circuit, and the 18650s I get are usually quite nice: Since the manufacturers get to order monstrous lots, not only do they tend to get the “cream of the crop”, they get batches of it, and not “minimum order quantity” size batches!! I’ve even found sequential serial numbers in a couple of packs. They work really well for me, anyway. And they do require the (+) spring!!

My friends and I also like the “C8” style. We call them “FatHeads”. They are very nice, if you can carry them. They make a better “overall” outdoor light than a 501B, but only because they give a little more “throw”. IFF you need to see anything “out yonder”… IMNERHO the C8 is ludicrous for EDC.

If you can mount one piece of a two-piece scope mount — anywhere — you can easily mount either a 501B or a C8 on it. The 501B probably wouldn’t be AS useful on anything larger than a pellet gun, a .22 or a pistol-caliber rifle. I’d include a slug-rigged shotgun in that list. I’d guess that would help with shot-shells as well, but I only shoot those for effect. That “throw” from the C8 would be reasonably well matched to a .308-class MPBR, but only with a good scope, and only over ground you know is clear of “friendlies” (all cats coyotes are grey in the dark…). That’s what I think, anyway. Look around for the “momentary” switches on cords for the 501B. You can swap the guts into the C8’s switch body and go shooting. Then you’ll likely learn to hate “modes” and “mode memory” at the same time, when the recoil causes the battery to bounce away from one of its springs or your finger bounces on the switch…

That’s it for me. I hope this helps some.

You’re in the Right Place for questions like yours, that’s for sure!

Laptop cells are often fine and in many cases can be found in better shape (Quality) than many cells available online. Yes heavily used ones aren’t great but in most cases they still function fine.

The real issue with laptop cells are that they are not protected and using them in multi cell circuits is pretty unsafe + they offer no protection when it comes to shorting, over-discharging or any of that.

You have to use unprotected cells safely and when used in that matter they should have no issues in the long term, to be honest I kind of prefer them with the lower cost and easier fit when compared to longer protected cells.

Use a multimeter to check the voltages, don’t use any cells below 2.4v-2.6v or so and don’t charge cells above 4.2v. If you have a cell that rapidly drops in voltage after charging (from 4.2- to about 4.10 or under) it might not be a good idea to use that cell frequently and it may be best a backup.

Don’t short em, that can be bad; be careful not to let the prongs contact the positive terminal and body when doing readings. If a cell ever gets really warm, toss it (Not literally, they should be safely discharged if possible and/or thrown into a saltwater solution for a while and then tossed).

I wouldn’t get a light that’s pulling over 3a either, that seems a bit extreme to me too ;). Those convoy torches look great (I’m impressed by my M2 and my S2 for the price) but now that my L2M came in I’m really liking the look.

Anyways that M1 should be great, hope you have some fun in the world of lithium powered torches.

Laptop cells got me into Lithium flashlights.
Cant beat the free cells

I have no real issue with getting stuff for free, or cheap if spare money isn’t forthcoming.

But seeing as most laptop batteries are likely heavily abused, I suspect many of the individual batteries are likely less than great.

Hazards aside with them not being protected, I just feel that most such batteries are likely to significantly under perform, especially in harder driven lights.

I like the C8 from intl-outdoor.

Hi all,
I’m a newbie here too but I won’t open a new thread as this goes very similar to me too, except i’m willing to spend max 30$ and free int’l shipping is a must. I looked for HD 2010 in DX but with no luck. Is this a good option ?

I know its not 1200lm but you know the newbie logic
I’m open to suggestions and thanks for your help….

For that price, I would recommend the XinTD C8 found here .

everybody likes that light, it was my first buy since i found this forum
just dont buy it with the cheap holster option, take the one for 5-6$.

Wow, that is impressive. I think i’m gonna get one with a U3. Thanks for your help
