Well on my lights that's the function. I'm sure some military/police/security types have another use for the tactical ring, say as an anti slip device, position holder or something like that. the foursided versions definitely function as anti roll. Similar to having flat spots on the head or tail.

Such rings also make it easier to do the "cigar grip", where you hold the light between index finger and middle finger like a cigar and press the button with your thumb.
