How to use a digital light meter

So I got myself one of these Hohe Genaue 200000 Lux Digital Light Meter Tester Photometer Luxmeter Sale - Banggood Deutschland sold out-arrival notice-arrival notice
How best to use it for consistent results, & what should I have it set to ?
As you might guess I don”t have a clue.

To put it VERY simply from what I’ve read, you set the light meter against a background that won’t reflect light. You can set it at the ANSI standard distances of 2, 10 or 30 meters. I’ve read people say that it depends on the reflector size, emitter etc. If it’s a thrower, you’d want to set it at a further distance.

After you set up the meter and light, note the lux reading and multiply it by 100. Then convert the lux to candela using a tool such as this: http://www.rapidtables.com/calc/light/lux-to-candela-calculator.htm

To ger throw in meters, read the last paragraph on this wiki: http://flashlightwiki.com/Light_Output_Measurements#Throw

I’m just starting out with a meter a generous member on reddit gifted me, so I am not the absolute best source.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can correct or add to this.
