How to use a flashlight tactically........................

I think it might be the Romisen RC-A4. I have a “X Q5” version that I purchased from Shiningbeam at the beginning of my transition away from expensive lights. Anyway, Mine is in the lumen range (200 + or -) and does not zoom. Runs on a single cr123a. Mine has but a single mode, the new one that I linked to has two.

Mrs Cone took it and won’t give it back. That should tell you all you need to know about how sweet that little light is. Not bad for $15 give or take if you use our discount.

You are correct, cone!

Hey, BT. Thanks for digging up the link. I went it looked it up too. Felt guilty about being lazy after my initial post. Little bit tired as the misses has dragged me out of the house 3 days in a row for 5-7 mike hikes. Anyway, I don’t think the SB version has the super low, just a “medium”, but $70 for the real deal is crazy and I’d live with the medium.

There is tactical and then there is tacticool. I dont recall anything in this article saying anything remotely mall ninja like. laugh, but the information in this article could save your life.

That would be the romisen rc-a4. It’s a pocket rocket and my favorite light. I got mine from dealextreme with the q3 and it’s plenty bright. mine came with a forward clicky.

Ok, in light of cone's earlier response, I couldn't resist:

That’s funny, BT. To be fair to Lakemonster, I’m sure he read the thread down to where the light is first mentioned (i.e. the quote he used), got excited, wanted to contribute, posted, then continued reading the thread.

Happens to me all the time.

Pretty good article. I think 120 lumens is a low number for blinding an attacker though. 200 would be my minimum.

There’s been a ton of talk of this kind of stuff online, in blogs, articles etc. It even made fox news after the aurora Co shooting.

Like so many things…. if you ask for advice on tactical flashlight use from 15 different defense instructors, cops, soldiers, etc - you will likely get at least 5 different answers.

Never hurts to ask though. Take it all in and do what works for you. There’s no right or wrong so long as you survive.

I know, just funnin' >)

I don't get to use that cartoon often enough.

Err,& me also.Never seen a Romisen rca4 in the flesh, you guys seem to rate them.My Mrs has a TI and likes it.Been a challenge to get her wanting, accepting a light.Thinks torch freaks are all nuts.I would rather her have a more nerly, pointy edged, agressive looking, pocket sized,EDC.The Romisen rca4 is the answer is it?wada ya think

DON…

Most people I know think im a freak for carrying a light. Why would you not when roughly half your life is lived with the sun down? Oh wait, you dont need a flashlight. Thats what cell phones are for!

Now,ya see.The Mrs Phone was the bug bear.It has a cracker jack light on it so she wouldnt entertain a proper Light. The TIs so cute she couldnt refuse and does the job nearly, but i want her to move on now to a more Tactical light.Working nights means she goes in dark and comes home in dark. The Romisen rca4 has a strobe which will work with the ploy.

DON…

Some guy here posted recently that IIRC it was some SEAL-type friend of his who told him 600 lumens :open_mouth: was considered the minimum output in order to have a sufficient disorienting effect on an attacker. I don’t know. I’ve been disoriented by less messing around in my garage. But then again I wasn’t attacking anyone either.

Well, I guess my Mini-01 sorta qualifies to this guy but that be one big stretch. 8)

As I already explained on EDCF, lumens don't mean shit. A deft EDC would hurt my eyes much more than my DRY... What matters is Kcd

Link to thread?

lumengentsia. I score right around Idiot on the Scaru-Binet standardized. :open_mouth:

Can't seem to find it but I will go into the basics. If you want to know more just post. :D

As you probably know, throw is measured in kcd while light output is measured in lumens. This is because lumens is the total amount of light, however unless you are blinding someone by holding the light a inch away from their eye then not all of the light will go into the eye. Only the hotspot (the bright center part) will reach their eye. That is the part that is measured in kcd, or maximum light output in one point.

disorienting? All I pretty much kinda grok is that if I high-switch my X100 on 3x26650’s (not even on strobe) while pointing it at your thighs, and you stood facing me from 25 feet away and you weren’t expecting it in a pitch black setting, I gotta feeling for second or three you would be feeling pretty disoriented in a WTF just happened much less why am I seeing so many spots way. 8)

I know what you’re saying it just doesn’t grok for me with certain lights that definitely do 600 lumens. Heck my TF X8 has enough spill too depending on distance from said you at waist level to prolly get yer attention. Much less if I strobe it. :open_mouth:

And the psycho-strobe on the HD 2010? Forget about it. You’re gonna know disorientation direct retina hit or not.

And I would never fault anyone for that.

I don't know, I tend to do fairly well with bright lights in my eyes. One time I looked at my STL-V2 straight on...
