Hunting Scorpions with a UV light!

Recently got one of the Taiwan UV drop-ins from Manafont (SKU: 6239) to spot cat urine.

There seems to be quite some fluctuation concerning the quality of these drop-ins.

It appears I have received a lemon :frowning:
Mine does not really illuminate any bodily fluids (even when using orange sun glasses) or security markings on banknotes.
It produces a lot of visible light and gives me a roaring headache when used for longer than a couple of secondsā€¦ even when wearing sunglasses.

Is it worth the trouble to contact Manafont about this?

Contact Manafont, if they play dumb and refuse to do something about it, then contact Paypal if youre within 45 days window ;)!

Thanks for the advice, vēer.
I did just that and will update the forum with the results.

Made me visit Manafont and purchase a SkyRay host and the linked emitter! Hey, for $20 itā€™s a no brainer! Canā€™t wait to get it and see whatā€™s going on around my houseā€¦.located smack dab in the middle of Texas!

If I find anything more interesting than how badly my 84 year old father misses the toilet Iā€™ll be sure and post pics.

Thanks keltex, very nice thread!

When I was growing up my dad owned a lumber yard. I remember once while filling an order for some 2x6ā€™s on a cool morning when I picked up one end of some long lengths to put em on the forklift there was a momma scorpion with what appeared to be hundreds of the tiniest little carbon copies on her backā€¦and they appeared to be eating her alive! The 2 heavy 26ā€™ long 2x6ā€™s (long lengths arenā€™t kiln dried, they tend to be wet, hence very heavy) had plenty of leverage out on that end, they went splat (think .22 rimfire) and there were a whole lot less scorpions in the vicinity! Perhaps my foot pressing down on the boards a couple feet away from the end added to the gunshot effect. Whatever. Those bad boys were little more than juice!

We had a built in oven, 2 up one on top of another with the controls about eye level behind glass. I guess a scorp got in there as a baby and then grew and couldnā€™t get out. We had a grown dead scorp behind the glass in the panel for close to 30 years, til the oven died and had to be replaced.

I just spotted these on FastTech for anyone who wears glasses but uses a UV light...

Yellow-lensed UV-blocking clip-ons... I don't use these but they might help someone who needs prescription glasses while using a UV light...

Anyone ever tried this UV drop in from Solarforce?

Uhg . . our little pug just found the first scorpion Iā€™ve ever seen in person . . about 5ā€ with tail extended, only 3 feet from the desk where I was sitting. She had been acting kinda weird, like she was rubbing something off her on the carpet just before that (which she does every once in a while). Then she started ā€œpointingā€ toward it, for lack of a better word (never done that and sheā€™s generally not a barker). Fortunately she showed no wound or pain from the episode.

First words out of my mouth to my wife who was grossed out to see the smashed body: ā€œGuess itā€™s time to buy that UV flashlight!ā€

PS - The pics above finally kicked me into heebie jeebie mode . . thanks for that!

Would they run away if you light them up with philips luxeon UV LHUV-0390-0450 http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Philips-Lumileds/LHUV-0390-0450/?qs=W988lRlZNbJjmSRKsijrug== (390-395nm, 3.1W, Peak Wall-Plug Efficiency 32)? What about LHUV-0380-0200 (380-385nm, 3.2W, Peak Wall-Plug Efficiency 15)? or LEDENGIN - LZ1-00U600 - LED 5W 365NM?

If you are travelling to an area with scorpions and decide to buy a UV flashlight to look for them, please take my advice:

DO NOT SHINE THE UV LIGHT AROUND YOUR HOTEL ROOM!

Trust me.

I didnā€™t take my boots off and I slept clothed afterwards.

I like those pictures of scorpions so much I would like to contribute my own picture of an arachnid I saw out on a mountain bike ride. This big guy is a Texas brown tarantula and apparently they make good pets. I attempted to pick it up to move it out of the trail so it wouldnā€™t get ran over and every time I would touch it it would flip over and play dead.

Yikes

It's not a problem if you bring your own sheets, burn them afterwards, don't sit on the chairs, don't walk barefoot, and don't touch the walls.

Just sleep in the car! LOL

Thereā€™s always this method of hunting scorpions.

Anytimeā€¦

lots of UV light photos on scorpions spiders and other bugs

Thatā€™s what i was thinkingā€”nice crunchy snacks.

Did your yard patrol end up being successful in reducing the population/infestation?

My wife is a scorpio. She seems to have a kind of cloaking device in relation to UV light.

Nice!
