I Hate Thieves, But I Guess I'm Lucky After All

If all else fails, get in the deep web and hunt them down….
But please, I’m kidding! Don’t hire someone with bitcoins to hunt them down and make them pay.

You are indeed very lucky that the Justice and police systems in the USA works relatively well. There are some well known excesses but it appears that it keeps its citizens mostly safe.

In my country (Uruguay) the justice is so lax that criminals are often back in the streets after few months, people and even policeman have been arrested for killing or injuring criminals in self-defense and people getting killed in robberies (the victim, not the criminal) is an everyday occurrence for a country with 3 million inhabitants. In fact just yesterday there was a street protest asking for more security. That the interior minister (which is in charge of police) only qualification for the post was killing policemen during the guerrilla in the 70’ doesn’t help at all! It’s a shame that next election is in 2019.

My own department wouldn’t investigate my truck being broken into with over $5000 worth of stereo equipment stolen (& you thought my flashlight addiction was bad). The suspects emptied crap out of their vehicle so they could fit my stuff in it. No one responded to take it as evidence but the mayor’s re-election signs were pulled up out of the ground and they had 3 officers & 3 detectives respond. I caught the guy myself weeks later breaking into a house which was occupied, which brings stiffer penalties. During the foot chase that ensued, the suspect ran through the woods and came out right behind my house where the truck was burglarized weeks before. I tried to drag him back thru the woods to make him confess but my lt. wouldn’t go for it

Wow, that is sad… no investigation. :person_facepalming:
To bad the lt. was present when you caught him…

Oh man. So sorry to hear this terrible news. I hope they roll up all the perpetrators and give them max sentences..

Here in the UK it would be decided they were the victims of a bad childhood (or substitute some other excuse…), they would be sent on a holiday to heal their mind then given counselling to help redirect their lives.

Jail time is for those who don’t pay their taxes.

you need a sign a friend posted on his property.
please trespass.dog food is expensive.

We’re coming up on the 2nd anniversary of our cabin break in. Last week we got a letter from our county corrections / probation and parole department. They informed us that as a part of his sentence, the leader was ordered to pay restitution. He received a 5 year sentence, probation with ankle bracelet. He is working. We were asked to supply receipts for the stolen and still missing property. I have receipts for almost half, about $1950. We are meeting with the county person in a few days to hand over the list. The official has the power to include items for which we don’t have receipts at his discretion. That is why we opted for a face to face meeting rather than just mailing the receipts. Maybe it will help us.

Anyhow, we will happily accept any monies. As we were only one of about three dozen burglaries our share may be small, may be slow in coming. However, at this point I do not know how many other cases were tied to the thief or how many he admitted to. The police never recovered any of our property other than what was recovered when they caught the guy on our ATV with our shotgun. The guy and his friends had developed a very rapid disposal system.

I finally got around to installing a new door. For the last two years we’ve been making do with a sandwich patch of 1x6 boards. I cut out the badly bent door section and sandwiched the edge. We’ve used a padlock on a sliding bolt.

Yesterday I pulled the old door frame out, cleaned up the foamed infill, and installed a new prehung steel door. This time I did not bother with a deadbolt. I was impressed with how sturdy the first deadbolt installation was. It took a lot of effort, time and may have been noisy. In the city it may have made the thieves give up. Out here with only the pine trees watching a deadbolt doesn’t make as much sense, now. If there is another break in there should be less damage to repair. That’s my theory anyhow.

Yeah, back in the late ’80s the “in” thing was smash’n’grabs in cars, especially at night and at workplace parking-lots.

For a while, I wasn’t locking my car-doors, but just left the alarm on. So any freelance socialist wanting to “redistribute” any of my wealth in his direction wouldn’t have to bust the window or pop the cylinder, but just open the door, let the alarm start blaring, and grab the absolutely-nothing he’d find in plain sight in those few seconds he’d want to hang around before it’d attract too much unwanted attention.

Nothing ever happened, thankfully, but if someone were intent on grabbing anything, I could’ve saved the bux on having to replace glass and/or repair lock+sheetmetal.

Actually, scratch that. I do remember once at night, pouring rainstorm, my alarm went off after midnight. Was probably the creepy neighbor-kid 2 doors down who just opened the car-door looking for a quick score, as in the seconds it took me to get to the window, no one was around the entire length of the block.

Don’t leave any valuables there or at least minimize the amount. Surveillance cameras , battery powered is a must.
Justice does not exist anywhere anymore, so expect a loss this time. Just don’t leave anything there because it will probably happen again.

I hate thieves like that. My wife and I rented a small house for a few months located about 100 yds from the in-laws house. They had a few chickens and something had eaten one of them. I had a new 1978 Honda 750 motorcycle parked in the driveway and covered with a tarp at night. One evening we walked over to the in-laws with my 870 Remington 12 gauge shotgun in hand to try to kill the varmint killing the chickens. No luck with that, however when we walked the 100 yds back home, the motorcycle was uncovered, the thief had attempted to steal the bike and had to see me with a gun in hand. What can one do to protect their belongings ? I don’t know…… Thieves are crazy…
