Lawn mowing and equipment

I keep an acre maintained with a Snapper walk-behind . 48" deck , 16HP Kawasaki engine .

I figured out years ago that a riding lawnmower was bad on my back .

I bought this 100% reliable Honda for $399 12 years ago. Perfect for my small 50' x 125' lot. When it dies, I'll be buying a Honda again..

Crappy picture

Does a fine job :)

Does anybody have beverage holders from factory or afermarket? Mine has a spot for a cold beverage or a handled thermal mug- could be a frosty mug, but I try to keep beverages covered. There is also a 12v outlet which is good to charge the phone.

Mines got a holder for a frosty road soda… I think it has a 12v outlet too… Can’t remember

Just replaced my 1999 Craftsman 42” with a new Husqvarna 24HP 48” Fast Tractor. It does 7.5mph vs 5.5mph.
Just got my new chains, and blade should be here soon. Sold my old one with chains and blade as a package.

Push mower is a Troy Bilt.

Well, it may be quite a while before I end up cutting grass. The snow was up 15 inches on the door in back the garage. There is at least a solid foot of snow on the lawn. But when the grass starts growing I’ve got to mow twice week to keep it looking nice.

Does anybody allow their signifant other to touch their equipment or do you do all the work? Ok, that sounds bad, but anyways, does anybody get help with the yard?

no help, i do it all. i give her crap about helping… but i really dont want the help lol

Mow twice a week??? Never for me! I can barely put up with mowing once a week! I try to "scalp" it so I can squeeze out two weeks! Sometimes I mow my front 1/2 acre once a week and mow the rear 1/2 every other week.

And no, I get no help from others.

lol, we’re just trying to buy our first house. i think the lawn is 10’ x 15’, for me, I’d patio the lot and be done but I guess I’ll have to get a mower :expressionless:

Cutting it short probably would keep down on the cutting, but playing football or setting up a slipnn slide is way better with some good cushion. But no I don’t get help either with the yard and I’m fine with that.

A crew of VERY talented gentlemen from Mexico every two weeks. Give your grass a chance to grow, it’s much better for it.

If the “significant other” messes with the equipment I’ve got more work to do. Fixing the mower, fixing the things in the yard that got run over, replanting the small things that got done in.

How often you have to mow depends on a lot of variables. Type of grass, how much water and sunshine it’s gotten, is it a carpet of grass or does it have unwanteds trying to come out….keeping it mowed can inspire some types of grass to grow more lush with a better root system while keeping the taller growing weeds from successfully reproducing.

Mowing in the morning is never a good idea, watering in the morning usually is. With water in the morning the heat of the afternoon won’t scorch a wet blade, while allowing some soaking in time strengthens the plant for the mower later in the day. So mowing in the evening is a good idea, let’s the lawn recover overnight and then soak up more water in the morning. Or that’s how I’ve had it explained to me by a lifetime pro.

YMMV

Edit: scalping the lawn twice a month is usually very bad for it. It lets weeds grow and make seed and doesn’t inspire a healthy root system in the overall lawn. Doing more damage there than harm. There’s also a rule of thirds, like in photography but for different reasons lol. Cutting no more than a third of the blade off the grass leaves 2/3’s to gather light and grow on. So deep cutting can be very harmful to the individual plants that make up the lawn.

Ok found a picture. Grass was only like a weeks worth in this picture. I was glad to get this to cut it.

That’s a serious ride!

wow, im jealous. i would love a set up like that. i was planning on building a small FEL for my cadet, but that probably wont happen

id like to do something like that to my bolens once i get my cadet rebuilt. its about all that bolens is good for.

I wasn’t going to get the loader but I’ve found a million uses for it from moving snow to hauling logs for campfires. You could mow with it in place, but it’s really a lot of weight up front and messes up the balance of the machine. If you never see the JD quick connect stuff it’s pretty amazing. You connect the loader without getting off the seat and without tools just like the mower deck.

or the loader

Tough old model Bolens

This is the little liquid cooled twin cylinder 13hp honda that I bought to mess around with. It really sounds different than any other 13HP tractor i’ve ever heard. Very smooth engine.

A Windsor motor in a mower....nice !
