A good little unit. Just range limited. Stock I think I get maybe a 20 foot range inside of the house. Modified and with an antenna extension, possibly 60% or so more. With one of the ones I linked and a homebrew J-Pole antenna, I cover the whole house and yard.
20 feet would do it for me. The house isn’t that big and I could move the transmitter around if needed.
I keep waiting for them to ad weather band and SSB to this. I live in the US and just can’t get myself to spend that much and not get the weather band. I’d probably have that instead of the Skywave if it came with the weather band.
But as it is, the Skywave 2 continues to interest me for all it’s shortcomings. As does the Radio solar that I’m listening to now.
Yes! If I didn’t have a dozen radios with weather and and SSB, I can see it being a deal killer. But I do. For raw performance, nothing beats my DX 286 in a portable. We were talking FM Transmitters. There are dead areas in my yard for every other radio I own. I can collapse the antenna on the 286 and have no dead spots. It is amazing! AM is super hot too! I also have the CCRadio Solar. A great little radio.
I know it’s not logical to want the weather band, but it’s how I feel
. Plus I listen to it every day.
I can usually listen to my favorite radio station throughout the house with the wattage I’ve got in the cottage now. Adding the FM transmitter and a better MP3 player than my current one would be ideal. At least for the time being…
I think I finally found a winner:

This has buttons, a very durable zinc-alloy (probably Zamak) case, and tons of storage. It’s also pretty small - an easy fit in a shirt pocket.
My gut feeling is that the UI on this is going to be a headache since it doesn’t have directional Up Down Left Right Select type button layout.
FiiO Echo
I just went down the rabbit hole and came out the other side with this for my son: reasonably reputable Chinese brand, practical form factor, textual UI, HiFi Dac chips, 250 mW, side top buttons.
The UI will take a few minutes to master (no problem for anyone who can use a modern flashlight UI)
The only drawback for me is that the buttons have track to track, but not Rewind or Fast Forward, If you rewind frequently on Audio-books or Podcasts it might be tough with large files.
Reminds me of an older Creative player I still use occasionally, small, simple, text based and no need to look at it while in your pocket. I really like the button placement.
On first look it appears to be a cassette player… In the pictures.
Nice!
The FiiO Echo looks like a decent solution for those that have to have physical buttons. ![]()
I did some research on Amazon…
This is the one that I would order if I needed an mp3 player with physical buttons.

It kinda reminds me of the classic SanDisk Sansa mp3 players. ![]()
Just logged in to recommend the FiiO Echo Snowsky and find I got beaten to it. Built in battery, but it’s over 2x the mAh of your AliExpress choice. I guarantee a better player, look at the reviews, it shines.
FiiO stuff is great, I have one their DM13 CD players.
Looks pretty nice. Most of the recommended players looked like an Ipod (not really into Apple stuff) or were over $100.00 US. I saw this and thought it was actually a cassette player & they misbranded it LOL. I love the form factor - put the right music & headphones, and I’ll be back as a kid in the 80s.
I will have to check it out - maybe add it to my Amazon wishlist for B-day gifts.
I already bought the AliExpress player I linked, and used it at work. The UI is actually well-designed for the limited controls, and it feels solidly made, like a milspec MP3 player or a Zippo lighter. It’s not much bigger than a Zippo either - more like pager size.
