I’m no expert but the answer is it depends on each use case. Light for hunting is different from light for close up work, or for walking. I believe that a TIR lens could be designed to do any of the above. So far though for whatever reason (cost?) I am not aware of many large-TIR super-throwers. Acebeam L19.2 is one. The soon to be released Firefly E90 with ~50mm TIR and SBT90.2 is another.
Having said that, I have a couple throwers with reflectors, and I love the beam. They tend to have a large and useful spill , and if there are artifacts such as rings at periphery, or the cut off at periphery, these get so dim and so peripheral that personally they don’t bother me but YMMV.
The one important thing about TIR as @gravelmonkey has mentioned, is the tremendous ease of shaping the beam to preference for hobbyists. In my M21H I had 6 different TIR’s that each cost a couple bucks each, 2 of the TIR’s are not useable because of donut hole, but 4 allow me to shape beam from throwy to floody with ease. I posted the beam shot here in case anyone is interested. I can’t do that with reflectors as the dimensions of the head are limiting factors, so only reasonable choices are SMO vs OP.
