Project Farm flashlight roundup

Thats normal. Imagine an Indianapolis 500 race driver doing automobile reviews. The car that would win every time would be the fastest one.

Personally I do not like his reviews. The best reviews are on YouTube from people that own the product.

How can you tell me which flashlight is best from a group of 20 when you dont own any of them.

All it is, is entertainment.

I’m thinking of e-mailing Todd with suggestions for another flashlight vid.
What lights do you think i should suggest? I have very limited experience to choose from so i’m not the best one to come up with suggestions.

If we can put together say half a dozen to a dozen lights i’m happy to send the list.

My thoughts are Convoy M21B, Wurkkos FC11C.

Sofirn model ideas?
Other Wurkkos ideas?
Acebeam model ideas?
Olight model ideas?
Other model ideas?

I’m not quite sure what he’s looking for, whether flooders, throwers, etc.

I get most use from flooders, but he was trying to light up shiite miles away, so something like an EC50 gen2 would “fail”, and I love that nice floody beam for short to intermediate distances.

Look at it as what are the best lights we enthusiasts use to recommend.

He has the excellent characteristic that he doesn’t waste not even a second of his viewer’s time. He dives into the point of the video right away.

Off topic: Mr. P.F. also reviewed and compared Linus’ screwdriver.

He’s wonderful.

Most talky videos, I gotta speed up playback to 1.50× or even 1.75× just to not get pist off, but he’s the only one who just speaks faster than my brain can process language, so I keep his channel as-is and just back-arrow if I need something repeated.

SOME of the best reviews. Seems the majority are shallow, lacking, and often pretty pathetic. The trick is finding the decent ones among the mess of useless blather. Thus…sites like this. But BLF is a narrow band in a big world.

Bump

No flashlight suggestions?

Too many lights are “Meeeee tooooo!” versions of other lights, just different colors, shapes, etc. Pick a Wurkkos FCxx or Sofirn SPxx or Convoy Mxx, and too many are generally way too similar. Great EDCs, but what separates one from the others?

What they tested at PF were biased towards throwers. Great if you’re also looking at those trees 100yds out, but useless at close distances if you have essentially a flashlight version of a laser-pointer.

I get annoyed at my TS10 because it steps down if the battery’s not fresh off the charger and I want more oomf, but it has the best beam by far at close ranges. TS10 optics in an 18650 or better yet 21700 would be ideal, yet would woefully fail the PF tests.

Suggestions for “good” lights would be basically gaming the system like ANSI brightness ratings, testing at 30sec. So the mfrs have it go full blast for 31sec then step down to nothing.

So great lights that aren’t throwers would rate near the bottom.

That’s probably why nothing really jumps out as good candidates.

I get what you are saying, he seems to have picked no name Zoomies, i have not even heard of most of those brands.

I was also thinking about what category to suggest, I’d go with all purpose lights like the M21B level, decent throw and flood and not zoomies. Preferably in 21700. I just don’t know the category well enough to make suggestions, i own a couple Wurkkos and Sofirn and 4(iirc) Convoys.

Also as to what he would be testing, throw and runtime which we already know. Durability and lumen maintenance is not common knowledge.
I like lights with high sustained brightness, the M3C can maintain about 1600 lumens which is amazing. I have also liked the IF23Pro in this respect (1300 lumen sustained max) and 600 lumen sustained max of the WK30 (iirc).

If it were me i would test a Convoy, Wurkkos, Acebeam, Imalent, and Olight. Though which ones is beyond my flashlight experience, i have never owned some of those brands.
Are there other good brands i am missing?

Perhaps this idea is not feasible then?

He was testing A Flashlight™. Not a thrower, an EDC, a flooder, a keychain light, etc.

Unfortunately, what he was testing was when some n00b comes here and asks the question, “What’s the best flashlight I should get?”.

And then 20 people have to ask what he intends to do with it, explain what the different types are, etc.

They want small, 2000lm, 2km throw, “usable spill”, runs on turbo for 6hrs, and stays cool to the touch… and all for under 30bux. Yah, good luck with that.

Of course, they never heard of CT, CRI, R9, etc., and don’t care.

I think you are overstating your case here, i have watched many of his videos and he is acting in good faith.
He obviously knows nothing about this hobby and he chose many useless junk lights as a result. Plus he can’t realistically test hundreds or thousands of light models.
If he were a flashaholic he would be able to choose better test candidates.

Which is why i would send him a better list if i had the knowledge to do so. Perhaps i am not asking who i should be asking, @zak.wilson and @ChibiM , what lights would you recommend be tested in the above video if there is a remake?
Assuming say half a dozen to a dozen handheld lights, 1 x 18650 or 21700.

Absolutely he does it in good faith, I have zero doubt about that.

But yeah, he isn’t familiar with The Hobby™ and probably just picked a bunch of candidates from amazon when searching for “flashlight”, from various claims and pricepoints.

It would be the same for tire-inflators, ratchets, car wax, etc. I’d do the same.

If I were a car detailer and knew 50 brands of car wax, what worked and what was garbage, what ingredients made it last, what kept water-repellant properties, I’d probably also be snickering and questioning his choices picked from an amazon search.

The problem is that “flashlights” is so across-the-board that it’s like trying to compare “wrenches” and mixing’n’matching box wrenches, adjustable wrenches, socket wrenches, pipe wrenches, crescent wrenches, etc. Of course each one is designed for a very different specific job.

It’s like comparing a Q8 sodypop-can light with a C8 thrower with an E3A keychain light with an SK68 zommie.

Instead, maybe invite him to this thread to read and jump in with questions, etc.

Tough question.. I would probably say a few branded flashlights, but no Lumintop or any other small manufacturer. The moment the video is released the flashlights may be discontinued, out of stock, or replaced.

sorry I missed that question

Please don’t come to the conclusion that if someone has many followers that they are speaking the truth. History has proven this wrong countless times.

Yes, but he does do some interesting testing on lots of different things. The selection my be limited. Unfortunately most of his testing does not include the specific thing I am looking to buy… But he provides good data for the things that he does test. Also I have never heard him recommend something specific. He normally just says this “thing” had the best numbers in this test.

“Truth” ??? Well I think he tells the truth about how he tested and the numbers that he got.

The Truth.

Now there is a tough one.
We tell children to always tell the Truth, yet we lie to them from a young age.
Eventually they figure this out and realize we were the liars all along.

Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, aunt Mary’s dress, and the biggy Santa Claus.
When we grow up we realize the whole world is really just the man behind the curtain pulling the strings, Ala Wizard of Oz.
And we can’t even get into the sky wizard.
We get lied to every day by the Media, Govt, Employers, Stock Market, Car Dealers, Investors, Insurance companies, the list in endless.

Real Truth?
Life, Taxes, Death, more Taxes

Flashlights?
Yeah, they work most times and make light, some better than others.

Sometimes you “need” to lie.

Your friend just bought a new car but its a car you absolutely despise and you think its garbage.

You really cannot tell him the truth. Matter of fact, you have to congratulate him and complement him.

Countless examples like this.

…and nothing wrong with parents telling kids the tooth fairy or Sanata Claus exists.

I dont know any child that grew up resenting his parents for this.

True dat. Like…

“Do these pants make me look fat?”

“No, your fat ass makes you look fat.”

He should be getting out of the hospital next week.
