how to tell the difference between R2 and T5?

First, don't buy either of those.

Second, R2, Q5, T5 are brightness bins. You can't really tell for sure without instrumentation. They don't specify emitter types but probably XR-E and XP-G.

Look at this reference thread.

Welcome to BLF julfriight,

Answer to question: you don't, the difference is too small, other variations in the flashlights too large, you can't see it, you can't measure it.

note: you are about to buy a flashlight with outdated (XR-E) emitter. The XR-E is still a fairly good emitter for throw, but there more efficient options now! Read a bit here and there, on this forum, on flashlighwiki.com, and you will buy a better flashlight.

The easy way: tell us what your wishes are, and we tell you the best and cheapest flashlight out there :-)

GJ, is likely also saying don’t buy that because there are cheaper ways to obtain a C8. They are fun lights. Great starter lights to begin the flashlight collection & tinkering.

Some of us probably own 10+ of these lights. 0:)

Check out this:
UltraFire wf 502b XML2 U2 1A, $10.88

Don’t buy this over expensive crap, the battery and charger are absolute junk.

Best C8 available
choose XML2-4c SMO for neutral white light and a lot of throw

Very good battery
