It’s definitely not a simple matter too battery swap. The visible side of the battery, that faces the emitter looks like the negative end to me :-/

That's a bummer! Why would they design that directly wired to the battery?
I'm sure there is a mod work around. It doesn't seem that difficult.
If you took the chip off the battery it’d just be floating about, so you’d need to epoxy it in place, and design a contact, with springs? 
Little beyond my abilities. I’ll leave it stock, maybe trade it if I don’t find use for it

I’ll probably feel like taking it apart. I hope it’ll still work afterwards.
