Review: DRY 3*XM-L 3*18650 4-mode neutral white

Hi Shank2001, i guess exact runtimes are impossible to be derived, because it will slowly follow the discharge curve and dim down.

Yeah I just noticed that my DRY was getting dimmer and dimmer. It got pretty dim! I kept expecting the batteries to cut, but they never did. It even started flickering. I used protected cells, they are supposed to cut off if the voltage gets too low, no? I hope I didn't hurt them, I'm charging them now, so I guess we'll see.

All my other flashlights just cut off when the regulation can't keep them close to the original brightness, so I never notice any dimming until, wham... Darkness.

The DRY feels like a more conventional flashlight the way it dims, giving plenty of warning that you should change out batteries.

I am so impressed with this flashlight! It would be perfect if there was no PWM, and had a regulated drive output, (which would probably extend run times) and maybe a 5th output level between medium and high that split the brightness jump between them. But I am sure it would cost a lot more with those features.

I love it though... Very glad I bought it.

Shank2001, try with 2 cells + some rolled up alu foil. You will get an ultra-low-low flashlight esp if the 18650s are already like at 3.5V. :)

Just noticed on Ric's site as of today that there's a message that the DRY is out of stock with an additional message of: NEXT upgraded batch will come at the end of Nov. I wonder what changes will be incorporated.

By the way, anyone know what size star/base the LED uses. I was thinking that buying the host, driver and LED's seperately will save me a few bucks since they charge $10 more for a ready to go NW. Plus this gives me a hobby to work on since it's now getting too cold outside this time of year. I hope to add additonal heating mass like Vinz did on anther thread.

5 x XM-L?

What do you exactly do with the alu foil? where to put it?

I told Ric my driver didn't arrive after 6 weeks, so he told me he would send me another one straight away :)

Just put roll it up and put it into the slot of one of the 18650 cavities.

Funny...prob got lost. It might show up suddenly, one of my Manafont packages showed up like after 2 months, it was unregistered so i was wondering if they even sent it out. LOL!

I tried it and it really works great! This is completely harmless for the light/boosts the runtime?

Should try to make something that I could carry with me instead of a piece of aluminium foil that gets crushed easily :d

Soldered a new driver, still doesn’t work. Don’t know if I did a good job but it’s the best I can do.if it’s not the driver, not the battery holder, not the tail cap, not the wires. Only left the LEDs I can think of. Anyone any idea how to check the LEDs which is in series? Mayb something like resistance chk across like the way to chk light bulbs if we cant input any power.

Bro, if you have access to a 9V battery, you can connect to the + and - directly and see if it lights up dimly. Did you also connect the polarity correctly? But first test the LEDs.

I use the original wires, the wires on the new driver is rather short. Took the wire connected to -ve of the led n soldered it to the point where the black wire is soldered n vice verse for +ve led wire.correct? No 9 v batt but I can put 2 18650 batt to get 8v. So I connect the batteries direct to the LEDs?

The metal clip of my lanyard I received with my DRY just broke off, good that I was holding it tight. I noticed a few days ago that it wasn't straight anymore. I guess it might be from tailstanding, as I'm very gentle with my baby :). Replaced the metal clip with a metal ring. More lowtech, and thinner so better for tailstanding!

Dry battery carrier

I got my turbo driver form Ric and installed it and no turbo was there something that needed to be modded before I put it in or did I get the wrong one?

I think the available drivers are now:

driver 1: Low, Medium, High, Turbo

driver 2: Low, Medium, High, Strobe

If you have strobe, then you probably don't have Turbo.

Exactly driver 2 came with my light. When the turbo driver was released I ordered it I wanted the turbo I installed it and it is the same as what I had the strobe not the turbo.

Let's hope mine is ok, i ordered one almost 2 months ago but it was send to the wrong adress, so now waiting for it to be send to the right one :).

I was walking last night with the DRY and i was thinking: wouldn't it be possible to design a bezel with reflector to make the DRY more of a thrower (bit like the scorpion turbohead) so i made some 3d models and did some rendering. On the left the original DRY and in the middle/left my tries.

But as i was expecting this doesn't work, because the added bezel/reflector is situated where the current reflectors end. The light emitted from the led has to be channeled immediately from the start, so that's why the tk70 has 3 deeper reflectors instead of 3 shallow ones and a bigger one in the front. Instead of adding throw it even seems to bring the intensity of the hotspot down.

Reflector depth has only a minor influence on throw. It's the reflector diameter, or more precisely the total effectively used apparent reflector area. The TK70 has a much bigger diameter, about 75mm effectively.

Is this light available anywhere at the moment or is it sold out everywhere?

Should i just wait for the newer version? Only five days till the end of november.

I would wait for the revised version 3,0 coming out soon ;)
