The optics on this are great. Definitely meant for running and other fast moving activities like orienteering, cross country skiing, dog mushing, skijoring, cycling. The white wall shots in the review above aren’t as revealing as an outdoor beamshot on a field, trail, or dirt road, but this produces a wide carpet of light from your feet out to the range of the light. That’s exactly what you’d want as a trail runner on a dark trail.
I wonder if these optics are the standard 20 mm size - if so, I’d like to get a hold of a pair to put in my running headlamp (Yinding 2x XM-L2, similar style as this light with 2x18650 battery pack). I can see the multiple rings in the TIR that seeming produces a blend of flood and throw that is like the headlamps that have multiple TIRs of different beam angles (LEDX for example). I see they have this style optic in several of their lights. I currently have a throw TIR and wide TIR in my running headlamp to produce a nice carpet of light, but it’s not as good as these optics.
Here’s a screenshot from the Flashaholic Youtube review that shows the kind of beamshot I like to see to visualize how well a headlamp lights up the ground from your feet to the range of the light. This is outstanding. I know it’s probably at 4000 lumens, but I suspect the beam is just as useful for running at the middle 600 lumens level.
This light looks like it would work with any standard bike light 2-series 18650 or 21700 battery pack with the 5.5/2.1 barrel connector, and would be great for using mostly on medium (~600 lumens) for running. A 2x18650 battery pack would be sufficient for my typical run.
