Review: XTAR UL1 Multi-usage Mini USB Light

It's a Goal Zero Guide 10 plus kit with Nomad 7 panel.

I don?t think Fasttech stock them.

I ordered the battery bank from Fasttech: https://www.fasttech.com/p/1380011 Couldn’t ask for more, less than $14, 6000 mAh (actual 4200), 3 output ports, 2 input ports, LED light, battery meter, etc. That’s a lot cheaper than you’ll find here in the U.S. Very happy with it. Nice small size.

Available now on Amazon from multiple sellers but watch the prices as they vary from good to highway robbery. Do an Amazon search for “Xtar UL1”.

Mine arrived today and I have a couple of cheaper ones on the way too. I will write a comparison when they arrive. The flex cable included with this one is great and makes it possible to aim it in any direction no matter what the orientation of the battery pack or wall wart USB connector is. Greatly increased versatility and useability IMO. That makes it worth the higher price by itself. The six output levels/modes are great too. If you have another make without the flex cable then you might consider ordering the below linked to item or looking for something similar.

I purchased two white UL1 almost half a year ago. Somehow satisfied. Very well made and could be very useful if you don’t already own an EDC. I planned to modify it by simply stuffing a neutral XPL but…. I then left them alone for these reasons:

- It’s PWM controlled or has a PWM like signal especially in the high mode (my eyes are sensitive to certain PWM lights, and for this one, the high mode (not the turbo mode) is the worst). And this very particular reason really made me think it’s not worth any further mod.

  • It’s very hard to disassemble the plastic case without damaging it. It’s permanently glued or hot melt, dunno
I planned to use this as my EDC (combined with my indispensable Xtar WP2S charger/power bank) but knowing this mini is PWM controlled just pulled me back. I don’t think this would be very efficient (I know it’s just my efficacy freaky thingy hahahaha) in terms of runtime. So I decided to keep my trusty HC50 back in my jacket pocket.

One of this UL1 has been staying in my room as my bed/reading lamp for months and it seems it would be like that for years to come hahahaha. I tilt it so that it creates a nice oval spot in my room’s ceiling. The moolight mode is perfect for sleeping, and the fast blinking could use some disco music (or the opposite). I love the indirect light because it’s very nice to the eye (no when it flickers).
Recently I changed the power adapter and the flickering was gone! Maybe it’s just the power adapter. Anyone here experienced the same problem?

Long gone now and I do not know of any equivalent. I still have two, working fine. The semi equivalent items currently available from China are a black plastic one with a white switch that costs under $2 with shipping. Mine, bought about the same time as the Xtar, are junk. No LED heat sink and the switch fails quickly. Estimated about 30 Lumens output, single level. There is also a similarly priced lightly finned aluminum version at about the same price of about $2 with shipping that I have ordered samples of. Looks like single level output without a switch. Ebay listings leave much to be desired.

The Xtar works great with a USB battery box or almost any 0.5 amp or greater output USB power source. Total of 4 output levels plus hidden signal slow strobe and SOS functions. Any members aware of a decent quality replacement?

There was also a machined aluminum Ravpower equivalent too. 3 output levels including a not hidden strobe function so hit the strobe every time you cycle through the modes. Highest output about 120 Lumens.

With the current popularity of USB power boxes I am surprised that these have disappeared. Lots of USB lights but most are reading lights or keyboard and night lights on flexible stalks. The flashlight head lights seem to have vanished so far as I can tell. With current high power USB power outputs a new one could be a lot brighter if properly designed to pull the now commonly available 10 to 12 watts.

I just found a potential replacement for the XTAR UL1 on Ebay, from China of course. 3 modes including strobe per the description and machined aluminum with a switch. I have ordered a couple and will report once they arrive. One USA claimed seller for circa $7 including shipping and multiple Chinese sellers for prices circa $3.60 with shipping.
